Courses ranging from evening classes and short, focussed courses to full-time university programmes reflect a broad interest in studying creative writing in the Nordic countries.

Interest in creative writing has grown rapidly in the Nordic countries since 2000, and today a large selection of courses are available. Several universities offer two-year, full-time courses in advanced creative writing, and some folk high schools offer reputable one-year courses. At a less intensive level, there is a large number of public and private institutions which offer part-time courses in creative writing in the evenings, at weekends or during the summer. These courses usually specialise in specific genres, e.g. poetry or short stories, and are sometimes aimed at particular sectors of the general public, e.g. teenagers or the partially sighted.

Generally speaking, students on short courses participate with the sole intention of learning to express themselves more effectively. Students taking university courses, on the other hand, often become professional writers. Full-time programmes give these students the opportunity to practise their art, and are in this respect similar to the established tradition among students of music, theatre and the visual arts.

Litterär gestaltning , at Gothenburg University, Sweden, and Forfatterskolen in Copenhagen are two of Scandinavia’s most prestigious creative writing courses, where some of the students have been published before starting and well-known authors are among their lecturers. Lund University, Sweden, offers a Master’s degree in creative writing. Forfatterstudiet in Bø, Norway, offers a one-year course. Aschehoug, one of the largest publishing houses in Norway, have their own writing school, although some critics have expressed concern that these students may be trained in a style designed to suit Aschehoug’s particular publishing ethos. In Finland, Työväen Akatemia (Worker’s Academy) offers a one-year course in collaboration with Oxford’s Ruskin College, and Åbo Akademi University offers a two-year course.

Creative Writing 101: Everything You Need to Get Started

Creative writing: You can take classes in it, you can earn a degree in it, but the only things you really need to do it are your creative thinking and writing tools. Creative writing is the act of putting your imagination on a page. It’s artistic expression in words; it’s writing without the constraints that come with other kinds of writing like persuasive or expository.

What is creative writing?

Creative writing is writing meant to evoke emotion in a reader by communicating a theme. In storytelling (including literature, movies, graphic novels, creative nonfiction, and many video games), the theme is the central meaning the work communicates.

Take the movie (and the novel upon which it’s based) Jaws , for instance. The story is about a shark that terrorizes a beach community and the men tasked with killing the shark. But the film’s themes include humanity’s desire to control nature, tradition vs. innovation, and how potential profit can drive people in power to make dangerous, even fatal, decisions.

A theme isn’t the only factor that defines creative writing. Here are other components usually found in creative writing:

Creative writing typically uses literary devices like metaphors and foreshadowing to build a narrative and express the theme, but this isn’t a requirement. Neither is dialogue, though you’ll find it used in most works of fiction. Creative writing doesn’t have to be fictional, either. Dramatized presentations of true stories, memoirs, and observational humor pieces are all types of creative writing.

What isn’t creative writing?

In contrast, research papers aren’t creative writing. Neither are analytical essays, persuasive essays , or other kinds of academic writing . Similarly, personal and professional communications aren’t considered creative writing—so your emails, social media posts, and official company statements are all firmly in the realm of non-creative writing. These kinds of writing convey messages, but they don’t express themes. Their goals are to inform and educate, and in some cases collect information from, readers. But even though they can evoke emotion in readers, that isn’t their primary goal.

But what about things like blog posts? Or personal essays? These are broad categories, and specific pieces in these categories can be considered creative writing if they meet the criteria listed above. This blog post, for example, is not a piece of creative writing as it aims to inform, but a blog post that walks its reader through a first-person narrative of an event could be deemed creative writing.

Types of creative writing

Creative writing comes in many forms. These are the most common:

Novels originated in the eighteenth century . Today, when people think of books, most think of novels.

A novel is a fictional story that’s generally told in 60,000 to 100,000 words, though they can be as short as 40,000 words or go beyond 100,000.

Stories that are too short to be novels, but can’t accurately be called short stories, are often referred to as novellas. Generally, a story between 10,000 and 40,000 words is considered a novella. You might also run into the term “ novelette ,” which is used to refer to stories that clock in between 7,500 and 19,000 words.

Short stories

Short stories are fictional stories that fall generally between 5,000 and 10,000 words. Like novels, they tell complete stories and have at least one character, some sort of conflict, and at least one theme.

When a story is less than 1,000 words, it’s categorized as a work of flash fiction.

Poetry can be hard to define because as a genre, it’s so open-ended. A poem doesn’t have to be any specific length. It doesn’t have to rhyme. There are many different kinds of poems from cultures all over the world, like sonnets, haikus, sestinas, blank verse, limericks, and free verse.

The rules of poetry are generally flexible . . . unless you’re writing a specific type of poem, like a haiku, that has specific rules around the number of lines or structure. But while a poem isn’t required to conform to a specific length or formatting, or use perfect grammar , it does need to evoke its reader’s emotions, come from a specific point of view, and express a theme.

And when you set a poem to music, you’ve got a song.

Plays, TV scripts, and screenplays

Plays are meant to be performed on stage. Screenplays are meant to be made into films, and TV scripts are meant to be made into television programs. Scripts for videos produced for other platforms fit into this category as well.

Plays, TV scripts, and screenplays have a lot in common with novels and short stories. They tell stories that evoke emotion and express themes. The difference is that they’re meant to be performed rather than read and as such, they tend to rely much more on dialogue because they don’t have the luxury of lengthy descriptive passages. But scriptwriters have more than just dialogue to work with; writing a play or script also involves writing stage or scene directions.

Each type of script has its own specific formatting requirements.

Creative nonfiction covers all the kinds of creative writing that aren’t fiction. Here are some examples:

Give yourself time and space for creative writing.

It’s hard to write a poem during your lunch break or work on your memoir between calls. Don’t make writing more difficult for yourself by trying to squeeze it into your day. Instead, block off time to focus solely on creative writing, ideally in a distraction-free environment like your bedroom or a coffee shop.

Get to know yourself as a writer

The more you write, the more in tune you’ll become with your strengths and weaknesses as a writer. You’ll identify the kinds of characters, scenes, language, and pieces you like writing best and determine where you struggle the most. Understanding what kind of writer you are can help you decide which kinds of projects to pursue.

Challenge yourself

Once you know which kinds of writing you struggle with, do those kinds of writing. If you only focus on what you’re good at, you’ll never grow as a writer. Challenge yourself to write in a different genre or try a completely new type of writing. For example, if you’re a short story writer, give poetry or personal essays a try.

Learn from other writers

There are lots of resources out there about creative writing. Read and watch them. If there’s a particular writer whose work you enjoy, seek out interviews with them and personal essays they’ve written about their creative processes.

Don’t limit yourself to big-name writers, either. Get involved in online forums, social media groups, and if possible, in-person groups for creative writers. By doing this, you’re positioning yourself to learn from writers from all different walks of life . . . and help other writers, too.

I wrote something. Where do I go from here?

Give yourself a pat on the back: You did it! You finished a piece of creative writing—something many attempt, but not quite as many achieve.

What comes next is up to you. You can share it with your friends and family, but you don’t have to. You can post it online or bring it to an in-person writing group for constructive critique. You can even submit it to a literary journal or an agent to potentially have it published, but if you decide to take this route, we recommend working with an editor first to make it as polished as possible.

Some writers are initially hesitant to share their work with others because they’re afraid their work will be stolen. Although this is a possibility, keep in mind that you automatically hold the copyright for any piece you write. If you’d like, you can apply for copyright protection to give yourself additional legal protection against plagiarizers, but this is by no means a requirement.

Creative Writing Graduate Programs teach the art of language. You could develop your writing through study and practice. There’s one other potential plus. Writing workshops often bring together students from different genres. So, you could get constructive feedback from many different perspectives. For example, students writing poetry could offer fresh insights into your creative nonfiction.

Creative writing courses are open to minors and non-minors. Students who declare a Creative Writing Minor receive first preference in enrolling in creative writing courses in the English department during pre-registration periods.

Opportunities for students with a Creative Writing Minor include participation in the monthly Afternoon Salon: A Student Reading Series and the University’s student art and literary magazine, Three to Four Ounces . See below for more details. The Creative Writing Minor complements all major fields of study. Some students pursue graduate work in creative writing to write a first book and further prepare for careers in teaching, publishing, professional writing, and other fields that emphasize creativity and the literary arts. Our minors and master’s students who concentrate in creative writing have been admitted to top master of fine arts programs in creative writing, such as the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and to top PhD programs in creative writing, such as the one at the University of Denver. Requirements

The Creative Writing Minor requires five courses (15 hours), including one 300-level literature course offered by the English department. The remaining four courses consist of creative writing workshops offered by the English department (poetry, fiction, and literary nonfiction) or cross-listed with the minor (playwriting and screenwriting); at least two of these must be at the 300 level. While CRW 100 counts towards the minor for students who wish to take this course, it is not required. To enroll in a 300-level workshop, students must have taken a 200-level workshop.

English majors may earn a Creative Writing Minor by taking four creative writing courses (at least two at the 300 level) exclusive of courses used to complete the major.

Creative Writing Faculty

Core faculty, amy catanzano , mfa associate professor in creative writing (poetry) poet-in-residence and co-director, writers reading series.

Amy Catanzano is a poet and transmedia artist who explores the cutting-edge intersections of literature, science, and the arts. She publishes poetry and experimental fiction, intergenre poetic theory, and multimodal literary works that challenge disciplinary conventions by applying scientific and technological innovation to creative and scholarly practice. An associate professor of English and the poet-in-residence at Wake Forest University, she often collaborates with scientists and visits scientific research centers for her projects. These have included CERN, where she was a research artist with the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider; the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics, where she was the inaugural poet-in-residence; and the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, where she worked with astrophysicists of the Dark Energy Survey. In addition to World Lines: A Quantum Supercomputer Poem (2018-present), a multimodal print, web, and arts installation project based on a model of a quantum computer that was featured by the American Physical Society, and the transmedia poem, Wavicles (2017), exhibited in the 3D Poetry Editor international group show, The Gravity of Words , she is the author of three books, including Starlight in Two Million: A Neo-Scientific Novella (2014), recipient of the Noemi Press Book Award in Fiction, and Multiversal (2009), recipient of the POL Prize from Fordham University Press and the PEN USA Literary Award in Poetry. She has an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa.

Laura Mullen , MFA

Laura Mullen’s writing is alive to the shared work of meaning-making and attentive to the unseen and unsaid. “Mullen’s shapes shift, disappear like the living but remain like lives… turn into new solids, solidarities of moving, hard-edged lyric social work… against loneliness…” (Fred Moten). “Mullen sets up a site of fluid exchange between text and reader, an inter-subjective process that inflects affective communication with a subversive sense of contingency…” (Amy Moorman Robbins).

Laura Mullen’s recent work has appeared in Fence , Court Green , The Bennington Review , Bettering American Poetry , and Interim , and her writing has been anthologized in collections from Norton, Wesleyan, and elsewhere. Her first book, The Surface , was a National Poetry Series selection, and her subsequent poetry collections and hybrid-genre works have been published by the University of California Press, Futurepoem, and Otis / Seismicity among other presses: her eighth collection, Complicated Grief , was published in 2015. A MacDowell and Karolyi Foundation Fellow, a featured poet at the International Poetry Festival in Taipei, a Rona Jaffe Award recipient and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow, Mullen holds degrees from the University of Iowa and U.C. Berkeley. A CD of Jason Eckardt’s setting of her poem “The Distance (This)” is available from Mode records, and her collaboration with composer Nathan Davis—”a Sound uttered, a Silence crossed”—had its premiere at the University of California San Diego, and was performed at Notre Dame and Williams College. A collaboration ( Verge ) with the artist John David O’Brien is available in a limited edition, and her translation of Veronique Pittolo’s Hero was published by Black Square Editions in 2019. Her ninth collection, EtC, is forthcoming from Solid Objects press in New York.

Joanna Ruocco , PhD Associate Professor in Creative Writing (Fiction) Co-Director, Writers Reading Series

Joanna Ruocco’s books include The Mothering Coven (Ellipsis Press), Man’s Companions (Tarpaulin Sky Press), A Compendium of Domestic Incidents (Noemi Press), and Another Governess / The Least Blacksmith: A Diptych (FC2). A Compendium of Domestic Incidents won the 2009 Noemi Press Fiction Chapbook Contest judged by Rikki Ducornet, and Another Governess / The Least Blacksmith: A Diptych won the FC2 Catherine Doctorow Innovative Fiction Prize, judged by Ben Marcus. She also works pseudonymously as Alessandra Shahbaz ( Ghazal in the Moonlight, Midnight Flame) and Toni Jones ( No Secrets in Spandex). Her stories have appeared in numerous literary journals including NOON , Conjunctions , The Black Warrior Review , Caketrain , Bidoun , Quarterly West , Western Humanities Review , The Fanzine , Marginalia , and Harp & Altar . Her work has also been included in several anthologies, including Dzanc Books’ Best of the Web, It’s Always Been a War: American Writers on Class, Pushcart Prize XXVIII, and The Force of What’s Possible : Writers on Accessibility & the Avant-Garde, forthcoming from Nightboat Books. She is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the innovative fiction publisher FC2 (Fiction Collective 2), which houses its editorial operations at Wake Forest, and co-edits the annual fiction journal Birkensnake with Brian Conn. She has an MFA in Literary Arts from Brown University and a PhD in Fiction from the University of Denver.

Eric Ekstrand is the author of Laodicea , recipient of the 2013 Omnidawn Books 1st/2nd Poetry Book Prize, selected by Donald Revell. His poems can be found in Poetry, jubilat, Indiana Review, Black Warrior Review, Catch Up, Bat City Review, and elsewhere. He was awarded a Ruth Lilly Fellowship by the Poetry Foundation in 2009 and has been the recipient of an Inprint/Brown Foundation Fellowship and a Houston Writing Fellowship. He was poetry editor for Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts from 2009 to 2010 and was the founding conference administrator for Boldface: A Conference for Emerging Writers. An Associate Teaching Professor at Wake Forest University, he teaches freshman writing and poetry workshops. His interests include modern and contemporary poetry, poetry writing, religious studies in literature and art, aesthetics, and practical pedagogy. He has a BA in English Literature from Wake Forest University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Houston.

Elisabeth Whitehead , MFA Associate Teaching Professor, Writing

Elisabeth Whitehead has work in a chapbook sampler, A Third Instance (Instance Press, 2014), which also features poetry by Rosa Alcalá and Craig Watson. A second chapbook, a pilgrim’s traveling kit , was published by Cosa Nostra Editions in 2008 . Her poems have been published in literary journals such as American Letters & Commentary , Aufgabe , Black Warrior Review , Colorado Review , Denver Quarterly , jubilat , and Quarterly West . She was a recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Helsinki, Finland. An Associate Teaching Professor at Wake Forest University, she teaches freshman writing and poetry workshops. She holds an MFA from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop.

The Afternoon Salon: A Student Reading Series

On the last Thursday of each month of the semester (if holidays don’t conflict), the Creative Writing Program and the English Student Association hold a literary salon in the form of a student reading series in the A.R. Ammons lounge, A107 Tribble Hall. Up to ten students sign up to read their poetry, fiction, or essays on a first-come basis. Refreshments are served, and students socialize before and after the readings. This very popular event fosters the literary community across the Wake Forest campus and offers a supportive space for students to share their creative work. We encourage all Creative Writing minors to attend regularly and hope they bring along friends who are prospective minors. Look for upcoming Salon events on the Department Calendar .

Three to Four Ounces

Three to Four Ounces is the student art and literary magazine founded on the original Wake Forest campus in 1883, where it was first entitled The Student . The magazine has undergone many changes since its inception, including a name change in the early 1990s to Three to Four Ounces , but has continued to serve as a creative forum in the Wake Forest University community and the Department of English for student visual and literary arts. The magazine is published once a semester by the students of Wake Forest University. Art, poetry, and prose submissions are accepted from the student body and chosen for inclusion in the magazine through a blind selection process.

How long is a Masters degree in Finland?

Most Masters degree programmes in Finland take two years to complete. The Finnish academic year runs from August or September to May or June, with small variations between individual universities.

How much does it cost to study a Masters in Finland?

There are currently no tuition fees in Finland for EU/EEA nationals. However, as of the 2017/18 academic year, Finnish universities have begun charging non-EU/EEA students for Masters programmes that are taught in English. These fees vary between €4,000 and €18,000.

Are Finnish Masters degrees taught in English?

Degrees in Finland are normally taught in Finnish or Swedish, but increasing numbers of Masters programmes are now being offered in English.

Will I need a visa to study a Masters in Finland?

Starting Fall 2020 students who are interested in creative writing will now be able to declare creative writing as a minor.. The creative writing minor is composed of five core classes that focus on fiction writing, poetry, creative non-fiction, a creative writing portfolio and contemporary literature.
