Reviewing the Literature on Total Quality Management and Organizational Performance

Journal of Business & Management (COES&RJ-JBM)
Every day, the expectations of the customers are developing and elevating, and it has been an organization's dream to meet its customers' expectation in terms of the quality of the product/service that it presents. Not to mention the density of competitiveness that is taking place between producers and service providers which has helped in intensifying the concept of higher quality and better performance. From that point, organizations have begun looking for more efficient and sustainable systems to reach the level of higher quality in accordance with the better performance that appeared to be attached to the high quality in many ways. Along with the competitive and the ongoing trials to reach the level of good quality, and within the deep understanding that the good quality is somehow attached to the good performance of both the employees and the organization; the concept of quality has taken a spread reputation of being the healing tool to many of the organizational flaws. management research field. It is one of the most applied and well accepted approaches for business excellence besides Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), Six Sigma, Just-in-Time (JIT), and Supply Chain Management (SCM) approaches. There is a great enthusiasm among manufacturing and service industries in adopting and implementing this strategy in order to maintain their sustainable competitive advantage. The aim of this study is to develop and propose the conceptual framework and research model of TQM implementation in relation to company performance particularly in context with the Indian service companies. It examines the relationships between TQM and company’s performance by measuring the quality performance as performance indicator. A comprehensive review of literature on TQM and quality performance was carried out to accomplish the objectives of this study and a research model and hypotheses were generated. Two research questions and 34 hypotheses were proposed to re-validate the TQM practices. The adoption of such a theoretical model on TQM and company’s quality performance would help managers, decision makers, and practitioners of TQM in better understanding of the TQM practices and to focus on the identified practices while implementing TQM in their companies. Further, the scope for future study is to test and validate the theoretical model by collecting the primary data from the Indian service companies and using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach for hypotheses testing.

Total quality management (TQM) is an integrated management approach that aim to continuously improve the performance of products, processes, and services to achieve and surpass customer’s expectations. To accomplish this objective, some key factors that contribute to the success of TQM efforts are to be identified. These key factors are often termed as critical success factors (CSFs). The purpose of the present study is to identify and propose a list of “vital few” TQM CSFs for the benefit of researchers and service industries practitioners. A quality tool “Pareto analysis” was used to sort and arrange the CSFs according to the order of criticality. A few vital CSFs were identified and reported. The results of this study will help in successful implementation of TQM program in organizations. The managerial implications, research recommendations, and scope for future research work are presented in the end.
