Awesome. I have been trying to bring transparent images from PPT to Google slides. When I use the transparency tool, then copy it to Google, it is finicky and doesn't always work. With this I have to save each image individually, but it works. I just wish google slides had a transparency tool.Thank you.

The Microsoft PowerPoint logo.

Microsoft PowerPoint provides a suite of basic image-editing tools, including the ability to change the opacity of an object or photo. If you want, you can even change the transparency of only a certain section of an image. Let’s take a look!

Changing the Opacity of an Image or Object

If you want to make an entire object or image more transparent, open PowerPoint and insert an image  by clicking Insert > Pictures. When the photo is on a slide, select it and a border will appear around it.

Next, right-click the image, and then select “Format Picture.”

The “Format Picture” pane will appear on the right; click the Image icon.

Here, you’ll see a few options. Click the arrow next to “Picture Transparency” to open its drop-down menu. Click and drag the “Transparency” slider to adjust the opacity of the image.

The scale is:

We’ve set ours to 50 percent.

You can see below what our selected object looks like now.

When you’re happy with the level of transparency you’ve set, close the “Format Picture” pane.

RELATED: How to Change a Picture From Color to Black & White in PowerPoint

Changing the Opacity of Part of an Image or Object

Before we jump into changing the opacity of part of an image, it’s important to note this feature only works on objects that are inserted as a picture. So, if you insert an image inside a shape, this option won’t be available.

With that in mind, click “Insert,” and then select “Pictures” from the “Images” group. In the drop-down menu, select whether you want to insert an image from an online source or your machine.

Navigate to the image you want to use, select it, and then click “Insert.”

After the image is inserted, make sure it’s selected, and then click “Picture Format.”

In the “Adjust” group, click “Color.”

Select “Set Transparent Color” near the bottom of the menu.

Your cursor change, as shown below. Use it to click the color in the image you want to make transparent.

After you select a color, every instance of it in the image will become fully transparent and take on the color of the background of the slide.

Unfortunately, this is an all-or-nothing tool. The part of the image you select will either become completely transparent or remain completely opaque.

Note also that if you print your presentation , the transparent areas of the images will be white on the hard copy.

What to Know

This article explains how to change the transparency of a shape in PowerPoint. Doing this reveals more of whatever is layered behind the shape.

This guide and its screenshots apply to MS Office Professional Plus 2019, specifically, but they should work similarly in other versions of PowerPoint. There are two exceptions where custom shape transparency isn't supported: PowerPoint for the web and the mobile app.

Can You Change the Transparency of Shapes in PowerPoint?

Shape transparency is supported in most versions of PowerPoint. The idea is simple: the more transparency there is, the more you can see through it.

Zero percent (0%) transparency means the color for the shape you've chosen is fully visible, whereas any number approaching 100% transparency makes the shape increasingly more see-through. You have complete control over this percentage level.

PowerPoint supports several shapes, from rectangles to more advanced ones, including arrows, callouts, flowcharts, and action buttons. By default, the shapes have a solid fill color which blocks out whatever is under them. Transparency is how you make whatever is behind the shape become more visible.

How Do You Make a Shape Transparent in PowerPoint?

You can adjust the shape's fill settings to make it transparent:

Locate the specific shape you want to edit. If it hasn't been created yet, you can pick one to insert into the slide through Insert > Shapes .

Right-click the shape, and choose Format Shape .

In some older versions of PowerPoint, right-click and then go to Format > Fill , or left-click and then look in the Format Shape toolbar for the Transparency button.

Expand the Fill menu from the newly opened slide-out menu on the right.

Enter a value into the Transparency menu, or use the slider to adjust it manually.

The Quicker Method for Full Shape Transparency

If you don't want the shape to have any fill color, as described above, you can move the slider to the right for 100% transparency so you can see through the shape. But there is a faster way to get this done, and it even works in the web and mobile versions of PowerPoint.

It's simple: use No fill . With this one option, the shape becomes completely see-through. It retains the outline, so the overall shape isn't completely invisible.

To do this in PowerPoint for the web, select the shape, access the menu next to the shape fill button (paint can symbol), and select No Fill . If you're using the mobile app, tap the shape and select the paint can at the bottom; this full transparency option is below all the colors.

First, insert a shape into a slide to match the size of the picture you want to add > select the shape > and choose Format > Shape > No Outline . Then right-click the shape and click Format Shape > Fill > Picture or texture fill > find the picture file > and choose Insert to fill the PowerPoint shape with an image . From the Format Shape menu, move the Transparency slider to make the image nearly or fully transparent.

To make an image background transparent in PowerPoint , remove the background to add transparency. Select Picture Format > Remove Background . If you want to edit the area marked for deletion, select Mark Areas to Keep or Mark Areas to Remove > Keep Changes .

How to Make a Picture Transparent in PowerPoint

Carla Albinagorta

Since PowerPoint is mainly a visual aid for presentations, it’s no wonder that images play such a big role in designing one. But sometimes a little bit of editing is needed so your images fit your presentation just right. Here you’ll learn how to make a picture transparent in PowerPoint in 3 easy steps.

how to make a picture transparent in PowerPoint

Making a picture transparent in PowerPoint refers to the act of taking a premade picture and altering it so it seems less bright, almost see-through. This is a great option for pictures that are maybe too eye-catching. Pictures are supposed to be an aid for the presentation. However, they can easily become distracting for the audience, turning them to a hindrance rather than an aid.

For example, it can work very well if you want to use a picture as a background for your presentation. In some cases, the picture might get in the way of the text in your slides. If your picture makes your presentation hard to follow, then it’s definitely no good. Luckily, making a picture transparent is a great option for fixing this. Knowing how to make a picture transparent in PowerPoint can help you tune up your presentations. They will look more polished and professional, and it’ll add another great option for your overall design skills.

If you’re working with more than one picture in a slide , knowing how to make a picture transparent in your presentation PowerPoint can also be useful knowledge. You can make them transparent to overlay them. You can even edit just one of them so they’re not competing with each other. Knowing how to make a picture transparent in PowerPoint can become a really useful resource for presentations.

make powerpoint slide transparent

How to make a picture transparent in PowerPoint

Here you’ll find 2 different methods to make a picture transparent in PowerPoint. Take into consideration that each one serves a different purpose, so you might want to read both!

transparent background PowerPoint

Method 1 for making a picture transparent

This method is for when you want to turn transparent a specific color or part of your picture. For example, the background. This can be extremely useful in cases where you’re working with a specific color palette and the background color of your selected picture clashes with it.

1- Insert your picture and selected it.

2- Go to the Picture Format tab > Colors .

3- In the drop-down menu, select the option Set Transparent Color .

4- Now all you have to do is click on the color you want gone! PowerPoint will immediately make all that same color transparent.

Take into consideration that since this is a pretty automatic process, the results might not be a sharp as expected. The more defined the colors are and the better the picture’s quality is, the better the “Set transparent color” option will work. Otherwise, it might end up looking pixeled and patchy. And no one wants a pixeled picture in its presentation!

Method 2 for making a picture transparent

This method is perfect for those wanting to make a whole picture translucent. Maybe it’s so it works better as a background. Or so it doesn’t compete for the audience’s attention with more important slide elements. In any case, this method will help you edit any picture you choose.

how to make a picture transparent in PowerPoint

1- Instead of copying and pasting (or inserting directly) your chosen picture, you need to insert a shape. A rectangle will do just fine! You can also experiment with other shapes to customize your picture. You can do so in the Insert tab > Shapes .

2- Now its time to insert your picture into the shape you just created. Right-click your shape and select the option Format Background to open the side menu.

images editing PowerPoint

In the Fill options, select the Picture or texture fill . Now you just have to search your picture. If you pick the File option, you’ll get a File Explorer menu for you to look for your saved picture.

image format PowerPoint

Since pictures on their own don’t have the transparency option, inserting them into an editable shape is what makes it possible to edit their transparency. If you skip these 2 first steps, the transparency option won’t even appear!

3- The shape you had created should now be filled with the picture you chose. And now you can edit the picture’s transparency. In the same side menu, in the Fill options, just below “Insert picture”, you will find the Transparency option.

The best part is that you can pick how transparent you want your picture to be. 50% is usually the go-to, but you can tinker around with the transparency options until you find the one that fits your slide.

Transparent images for your PowerPoint presentation

Transparent images can be used in the background to reinforce text. Facts, figures, diagrams and icons can also be enhanced with transparent images . It’s an effective way to highlight the most important figures of a company and to present them in an attractive way.

You only need one presentation program to format transparent images: Microsoft PowerPoint . It’s easy to make images transparent in PowerPoint – no special image editing programs are necessary . This saves you time and lets you edit your slides from start to finish directly in Microsoft Office.

If you’re working with a pre-2016 Microsoft Office package, you’ll need to complete an extra step by filling a basic shape (circle, square, etc.) with your picture. After that, the transparency level can be adjusted. Post 2016 and with the release of Microsoft Office 365, transparency has become even easier via the Picture Format tab. You can choose the right transparency level in the practical preview view.

What exactly does transparency mean for images?

PowerPoint Transparent Images

Transparency is a term used in computer-generated imagery. It refers to image elements that allow you to see what’s underneath . Opacity , or non-transparency, is its counterpart . The opacity and transparency of an image always add up to 100%. Below you can clearly see the transparency gradations from left to right. PowerPoint Transparent Images

PowerPoint has so much more to offer than just white backgrounds. In this article, you’ll learn more about transparency and the effect is has on text and data. You’ll also learn how to make only certain colors transparent in images. With all these tips, you’ll be able to focus your audience on the key content on your slides. Give it a try!

Make PowerPoint images transparent: Here’s how!

You have two options, the first of which is only available with Microsoft 365 and newer versions.

Option 1 (for newer versions/Microsoft 365):

Since the release of PowerPoint 2016, Microsoft offers a direct way to make images appear transparent in seconds.

In this section, we will show you how to create transparent images in Microsoft Office 365 and optimize the readability of your presentation slides.

Step 1: In Microsoft 365 PowerPoint, select your image and open the Picture Format tab. Click the Transparency option.

PowerPoint Transparent Images

Step 2: Use the preview images to select the desired level of transparency . The previews show you different degrees of the effect, from high to low.

PowerPoint Transparent Images

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to make images transparent in pre-2016 PowerPoint versions. Please note that an imported image with fixed transparent properties can’t be edited in PowerPoint. You can only customize an image’s transparency in PowerPoint if the transparency was created in the program itself. Making images transparent in pre-2016 PowerPoint versions requires a small, extra step which we’ll explain below.

Before we start, it’s important to understand the process. Pure image files cannot be made transparent using pre-2016 PowerPoint software. Only filled shapes can be made transparent .

You can use basic shapes, such as arrows, stars, squares and rectangles and then fill them with images . Since most graphics have a rectangular, standard format, we like to use a similar base shape as well.

Step 1: Open a new presentation or one that has already been saved. Go to Insert > Shapes . Under Basic Shapes , you’ll find arrows, circles, rectangles, squares, etc. Select one that matches the shape of your image as closely as possible.

PowerPoint Transparent Images

Step 2: Insert your shape (a rectangle in our example) on the slide. Remember to make sure your slide has ample space. To size the shape, hold the left mouse button while dragging it. Its dimensions should match those of your image.

PowerPoint Transparent Images

Once you’ve created your shape, you can further modify its size and position it by right-clicking it and selecting Format Shape .

Tip: By holding down the Shift key, you can create perfectly even circles and squares when dragging shapes.

PowerPoint Transparent Images

Step 3: The Format Shape menu will open on the right side of your screen. In the Shape Options tab, go to Fill & Line > Fill > Picture or texture fill . Under Picture source , click Insert and select From a File . Now you can browse your computer for the image you’d like to insert. Click Open to import the image.

PowerPoint Transparent Images

Step 4: Your image will now be a rectangular shape. Go to the Format Picture menu (the name changes when you insert an image). Under Texture , use the slider to adjust the transparency level. You can even type in a value . Sliding to the right increases the transparency. A value of 100 makes the graphic completely transparent.

PowerPoint Transparent Images

Note: This extra step of filling a shape with an image and then making it transparent also works in newer PowerPoint versions.

Quick guide: How to make images transparent (pre-2016 PowerPoint versions)

More transparency options for PowerPoint images: editing specific areas

Sometimes you only want certain parts or colors of a picture to be transparent . This is when the Set Transparent Color option comes in handy. Crop can be used to remove distracting areas of the image.

Note : This option isn’t available if you’ve inserted your image to a shape as a shape fill.

How to set a transparent color in PowerPoint

Set Transparent Color allows you to make just one color transparent in an image. Pictures usually consist of a large range of color variations and nuances. For example, if you have an image of a sky, selecting only one shade of blue may not produce the desired effect, since the sky consists of many hundreds of shades of blue. The best results come from using simple, solid-color images or clip art.

Step 1: Open PowerPoint and insert the image you want. Double-click it .

Step 2: Click on the Picture Tools tab.

Step 3: From the Adjust group, Select Color > Set Transparent Color .

PowerPoint Transparent Images

Step 4: When your mouse pointer changes , go to your image and click the color you want to make transparent .

Note: You can always undo the partial transparency if you aren’t happy with it. Simply go to the Adjust group and select Reset Picture.

You can find a how-to video of this process here .

Remove Background in PowerPoint: highlighting areas with transparency

Remove Background can be used to remove parts of an image that distract from the area you want to highlight. Maybe the background of an image is too dramatic and distracting. Or maybe you want to add a stamp next to a signature and need to remove other elements to avoid clutter. Microsoft Office helps you choose between areas to keep and areas to remove with its Background Removal options.

The Background Removal option is available in Microsoft PowerPoint from 2016 on. This tab allows you to select the areas you want to keep and the areas you want to remove.

Remove Background can be found in the Adjust group after clicking on Picture Format on the ribbon.

Insert a shape (Insert > Shape) and place it over the text.

Select the text and the shape, click Merge Shapes > Subtract . Make sure that the text is on top of the shape .

You’ll now have a shape with cut-out text that you can place where you want on your picture.

PowerPoint Transparent Images

If you’re using a version prior to PowerPoint 2013 , follow these steps:

Insert the image you want into your presentation.

Go to Insert > Text Box and drag a text box to your chosen spot on your image.

by Avantix Learning Team | Updated May 16, 2022

Applies to: Microsoft ®  PowerPoint ® 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021 and 365 (Windows)

You can make a picture transparent or semi-transparent in PowerPoint in 3 ways. If you want to change the opacity of an image in newer versions of PowerPoint, you can use the Transparency command in the Ribbon or the Format Picture task pane to apply transparency. In older versions, you'll need to fill a shape with a picture and then make the shape transparent.

Note: Buttons and Ribbon tabs may display in a different way (with or without text) depending on your version of PowerPoint, the size of your screen and your Control Panel settings. For PowerPoint 365 users, Ribbon tabs may appear with different names. For example, the Picture Tools Format tab may appear as Picture Format and the Drawing Tools Format tab may appear as Drawing Format or Shape Format.

PPT to PNG with transparent background

I have a PowerPoint .ppt file and I have to create an image for every slide.

I'm trying to use the integrated PowerPoint "export as .png". It works but the images have all a opaque background, I need a transparent one.

Anyone knows if is it possible and how to do it? (If not via standard export, also with a macro is fine)

You can select the shapes within a slide (Word Art also) and right click on the selection and choose "Save As Picture". It will save as a transparent PNG.

Justin Mitchell's user avatar

It can't be done, either manually or progamatically. This is because the color behind every slide master is white. If you set your background to 100% transparent, it will print as white.

The best you could do is design your slide with all the stuff you want, group everything you want to appear in the transparent image and then right-click/save as picture/.PNG (or you could do that with a macro as well). In this way you would retain transparency.

Here's an example of how to export all slides' shapes to seperate PNG files. Note:

This uses a depreciated function, namely Shape.Export . This means that while the function is still available up to PowerPoint 2010, it may be removed from PowerPoint VBA later.

One workaround that I have done is:

It looks pretty much exactly the same as in Powerpoint, and the vectors/text are very clean with their transparency edges.

Insert a coloured box the full size of the slide, set colour to white with 100% transparency. select all, right-click save as picture, select PNG and save.

copy/paste inserted colour box to each slide and repeat

I just tried to make a transparent image with powerpoint after failing miserably with other online systems. I was successful. Amazing.

First I used word art to give me typefaces which convert well to PNG or JPEG. The ordinary text in powerpoint does not convert well. It gets fuzzy. Anyway, I typed in my words in white (my choice of colour as i wanted it against a navy blue background), arranged it how i wanted, then right clicked and selected format shape to remove lines, then shadow to set the transparency.

I took the transparency to 100%. It came out fine. i then right clicked to save as png. Opened the image with MS Picture manager and resized the image to my suiting. It did not come out with the powerpoint white background at all. Once resized, i dropped the image against my navy blue background and it was like magic.

Here is my preferred quickest and easiest solution. Works well if all slides have the same background color that you want to remove.

Step 1. In Powerpoint, "Save As" (shortcut F12) PNG, "All Slides".

Now you have a folder full of these PNG images of all your slides. The problem is that they still have a background. So now:

Step 2. Batch remove background color of all the PNG images, for example by following the steps in this SE answer .

Depending on your application, you might be able to let the background color work for you! I needed the slides to overlay scripture on the lower third of our worship service video. I set the PPT background color to chromakey green and saved all of the slides as PNG files. The video system easily removed the chromakey green!
