If you are unsure what to write and include, you can follow these steps to create a traditional and beautiful maid of honor speech for your sister that everybody will love.

1. Introduce Yourself to Everyone

First of all, consider that not all wedding guests know who you are and how you are related to the bride.

You should start your speech by introducing your name, your relationship with the bride, and if you are her best friend, mention how long you have known each other.

2. Thank All the Guests

Planning a wedding is quite stressful, expensive, and demanding much time. It is best to take a moment in your maid of honor speech for your sister to thank your parents.

Additionally, also thank the guests who are present and helped to make a memorable wedding day happen.

3. Share Some Stories

After introducing yourself and thanking the people, you can now start sharing some stories of your choice. This part of the maid of honor speech outline has many distinct paths you can take.

You may tell an embarrassing experience that you and the bride share, so you can get the wedding guests laughing. You can also choose a touching anecdote about the couple, which might make everybody burst into tears.

4. Add a Meaningful Quote

To add more depth to your maid of honor speech for your sister, you can add a meaningful and relevant quote. In selecting the quotes, make sure it has meaning for you and the happy bride.

The quote can also be relatable for the groom and the attending guests. I recommend that you leave out the inside jokes that you and the bride only know because not all the people will get a hold of it.

5. Convey a Heartfelt Emotion

In this part of the maid of honor speech outline, regardless of what tone you want for your speech , it is always preferable to take a moment and acknowledge the beauty of the couple’s big day.

Even the funniest speeches during the wedding have a touching moment because everyone can feel the speaker’s heartfelt emotion.

Remember that in making your maid of honor speech for your sister, you must consider a combination of being funny and sentimental to maintain the best balance.

6. Give a Strong Ending

Give a strong speech ending through telling a final story, a quote, or making a toast for the newlyweds. Take into account that your maid of honor speech ending will be the part in which guests are most likely to recall, so this maid of honor speech outline’s section is a reminder for you to be creative.

The Dos and Don’ts

Since you are now familiar with your maid of honor speech outline, let us get into the “dos and don’ts” of your maid of honor speech for your sister on her wedding day. Knowing the things and thoughts to include and not is essential to ensure that you craft the best possible wedding speech ever.

7 Tips for Writing a Wedding Speech for Your Sister

Being the maid of honor includes specific tasks, and one of them is to spend some time, effort, and feelings to write a notable wedding speech for your sister.

We doff our hats to you if you love speaking in front. However, if the single thought of being in front of a crowd makes you want to pee, don’t panic because we have some tips for you.

We have listed seven helpful tips to teach you how to craft your maid of honor speech for your sister on her big day. Eliminate those nervous butterflies and deliver it with poise and confidence .

1. Prepare and start creating your speech as early as possible.

Starting early for your speech is preferable to having enough time to gather your thoughts and write something genuine. Allot a time for yourself at least three weeks before the wedding day to prepare and begin writing your maid of honor speech .

Trust us; we know it is tempting to procrastinate doing your speech , considering that talking in front would only accumulate around three to five minutes. However, don’t listen to that laziness kicking in your system.

No matter how good and creative you are as a public speaker, it is best not to wing your speech ; instead, it is better prepared, especially for a significant occasion.

2. Make your speech more personal.

Don’t be worried when your tears start flowing, and the tissues come out of your pockets during your maid of honor speech . Let your sister acknowledge how much you treasure and love her and that you are always there when she needs you.

Above all, extend your heartfelt gratitude to your sister because she chose you as her maid of honor on her most awaited day.

3. Have a perfect balance between being witty and emotional

You don’t want the wedding guests to be bored and have a snooze fest, so you need to be engaging and funny. However, remember that you are also not a stand-up comedian on that day.

Ensure that you crack some jokes, but with limitations. Create your maid of honor speech for sister extra-special by balancing emotions and personal moments.

4. Include meaningful moments that you shared with the bride

You are the bride’s sister; of course, you have known her all your life. This thought indicated that you have to tell everybody about your moments together.

The focus of your maid of honor speech for your sister is on her best qualities . You can describe your relationship and explain your unbreakable bond with her as you grow up until even this day.

5. Practice your speech

Practicing for your maid of honor speech is also practicing your speaking skills . There are various ways in which you can practice, such as the following:

6. Give some compliments to the groom.

Besides focusing on your sister’s best qualities, which I previously mentioned, add some compliments about your sister’s spouse. You may want to tell everyone about your first impression or the moment your sister told you about him.

In another case, if you knew the groom first and played cupid for them, you can explain to the wedding guests what made them realize their love for each other. You can also say his attributes that will make your sister happy and delighted for the rest of their lives as one.

7. Thank the guests at the beginning and end of your speech

Lastly, thank all the guests at the beginning and end of your speech . This gesture is a sign of acknowledging their time and effort in attending a significant occasion.

After all, this can be a daunting task. You love your sister. The last thing you want to do is embarrass her, or her wedding guests, on her big day. But what do you say?

What are the right words to reflect your relationship with your sister? How do you sincerely share the happiness you feel for her and her new husband-to-be?

And where, on earth, do you begin?

The answer is here. The good news is that it's straight forward, and simple. Not hard work at all.

How to start your maid of honor speech

Grab a piece of paper, a pen, and start with a brainstorming session to collect up the stories and ideas you think you might like to share.

Then follow each of the five steps in the maid of honor speech outline that form the speech template below.

You'll come out the other end of the process with a short, simple and sincere speech: one that really does honor your sister on her wedding day. Read the example speech and see for yourself!

Do a brainstorm to collect your thoughts

The best way to begin writing the perfect maid of honor speech for your sister is to collect your thoughts together. And the best way to do that is to brainstorm.

Image: Brainstorm - A collection of handwritten notes around central topic - My maid of honor speech for my sister Mary.

The brainstorming process

The brainstorming process is very simple. Jot down ideas about what you think you want to touch on in your speech, just as I've done in the image above.

Allow yourself complete freedom to explore as many potential topics as you can and, as much time as you need.

Recall fond memories. Remember shared experiences: the good times, the hard times and the funny times. Think about her best qualities: the ones you admire her for.

Do not edit or censor your words

Do not edit yourself! Put down whatever comes into your mind. Don't stop to worry about whether it's good, bad or appropriate. You'll review it later, and definitely don't stop to check your spelling!

You do not need to write full sentences or paragraphs: just notes. You want enough words to trigger your memory about what you thought would be a good idea to say and that's all.

If you run out of paper, get another piece. Keep going until you can genuinely think of nothing more.

Picking the best material from your brainstorm notes

Next you will pick the best of these ideas and organize them into the 5 sections of the template below. This will give your speech a logical structure: a clear  beginning, middle and end.

Obviously the tone: whether the speech is funny, amusing, sentimental or sincere, is something you'll decide for yourself. That's governed by the stories and ideas you choose to share and the language you use to express them.

Read a maid of honor speech example for a sister

This example maid of honor speech is based on the notes from the brainstorm image above.

The text of the speech is split into five parts: one for each of the required sections. As you scroll down the page you'll see it in the green call-out box under each section's explanatory notes.

1. The introduction to your maid of honor sister speech

In the introduction it's customary to identify yourself because there may be guests who don't know you and don't know you are the bride's sister.

Next you welcome the guests to your sister's wedding reception, thank the happy couple for letting everyone share in their day, and then you thank your sister for the privilege of being her maid of honor.

(I've added a story too: to make it more interesting and bring a smile!☺)

1. Introduction

What a day, Mary!

Remember when we were kids, how we dressed up in Mom’s old party dresses? And how we used to put a white table cloth on our heads and march around, singing, “Here comes the bride, fair fat and wide.”?

Good evening. My name is Jennifer, and this beautiful woman, this stunning bride: the antithesis of “fair fat and wide”, is my beloved little sister.

As little girls, we laughed ourselves silly over that game. Now here we are twenty-five years later.

Not laughing. Mary’s not wearing a table cloth. And this time it’s for real.

It's a great honor to be asked to speak. Thank you.

Thank you too, to all of you, for coming to share this special day with us. Especially Frank’s family.

We know Mary adores you, almost as much as she does us. It’s wonderful seeing our families all together to celebrate this marriage.

Next, you could share a short story: something humorous, or anecdotal, about the bride from your childhood memories. This will give the audience a picture of your relationship with her, and also set the tone for the rest of the speech.

Whether you choose to write something funny, serious or sentimental, the most important thing to remember is to be genuine.

2. History with the bride

The pair of us, share thirty years worth of loyalty and love: with an occasional sisterly quarrel thrown in. The usual sort of thing. Her snitching my favorite pair of jeans, without asking, and looking better in them, when we were 17 and 15 years old. A bit of phone snooping...Nothing major. Certainly nothing a bossy big sister couldn’t handle.

We shared a bedroom for a long time. That means you go through cycles of liking, loving and loathing each other. Sometimes all at once.

The jeans was definitely loathing.

The way she took my side over not eating Brussels sprouts was sisterly solidarity. Mary and me united against parental cruelty! I liked that.

But what was truly excellent, was our bed time stories: the ones we told each other. As soon as Mom turned off the light and closed the door, we’d pick up from where we left off the night before.

A favorite was the classic tale of a prince (handsome) arriving in the nick of time to rescue the beautiful damsel in distress, from some dastardly fellow, or a particularly nasty situation.

(We rejected stories about girls having a fabulous time up to their elbows in grease rebuilding a vintage car in the garage. We wanted lace, lots of it and happily ever after, down the aisle.)

In our stable of handsome princes, the handsomest prince of them all, the one we both swooned over was Darren. Darren was a super-super man created for us, by us. He was brave, brilliant, strong, just like Dad, and let us do whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted. (Not like Dad.)

Did he ever go out to work? Nah. Did he ever tell us we had to rescue ourselves? No chance.

Darren was always there. Always ready. Always had time and always, always knew what to do. Darren was masculine perfection.

I can’t remember the exact moment when this fine fellow left.

But I do know Frank had quite an act to follow.

Image: two little girls in matching dresses running through long grass. Text: A sister can be seen as someone both ourselves and very much not ourselves. A special kind of double!

This next section focuses on who your sister was and what she was doing before she met her new spouse.

For example, maybe your sister was busy focused on her career and never really gave enough time to finding a best friend and life-partner.

Or perhaps she was having a good time travelling the world when she found her match.

Or did she fall for her good friend, the guy next door whom she's known since she was eight.

Stories to avoid

There are a couple of things to watch out for.

The first is to be mindful about sharing anything that could be embarrassing for either your sister, her new husband, or your family members and friends. (Past relationships are generally off limits.)

In addition, please don't fall into the trap of sharing a tale or something about your sister that no one can relate to except for you and her. If you do that you'll find yourself looking at puzzled faces.

When my sister dreams, she dreams big, and then she makes it her business to have them come true.

High school was followed by college which was followed by the career she’s always wanted: to be an editor and read for a living. The pinnacle of bliss for a 'booky' girl! A job enabling her to bask in the afterglow of a successfully relocated sentence terminal: aka a period or full stop.

I’m proud of what she's achieved, how she balances her life, somehow making time for everything.  She's graceful, organized and appears, unrushed. (A trick I need to learn!)

Mary’s a good person, a great friend and my role model.

Then along came Frank. Was it true love at first sight?

Next, transition to a paragraph about your sister and her husband. How did they meet? How has the groom changed your sister’s life?

You can talk about how inspiring their relationship is to you or share a humorous story involving your sister and new brother-in-law.

This part doesn’t have to be very long.  It's necessary because it brings your speech into the present. A good way to conclude this portion is by formally welcoming the groom into your family.

Did she swoon? Was she in a ghastly situation: a set of parentheses too many? And nowhere obvious to put them? You’ll have to ask her yourself.

What I’ve learned about Frank over the last six years...

(Yes, six years! And you all thought it was tough waiting for her to get to the church. 10 minutes. Diddly-squat, compared to what she put him through!)

What I’ve learned leaves us in no doubt he’s earned her hand in his.

This man loves books just as much as she does. Hard to believe, but it’s true. Both of them live by the wisdom: when in doubt go to the library. You’ll find the answer to everything there.

Some people do bar crawls. These guys do libraries. And book stores, and book rescues: tatty, out of print treasures from street stalls.

He’s kind. He’s thoughtful. He loves walking in the country side, chocolate, and his dog, a golden lab called Fido.

We think Fido was the clincher, with dark chocolate close behind. Plus books, his ability to listen, to laugh...

In short to be there for her, day after day, night after night, page after page, chapter after chapter.

5. Conclusion

There are many possibilities for a conclusion. You could end with a quote, a joke, some spiritual advice, a toast or simply say, congratulations. Do try to keep with the tone you’ve set in the rest of the speech and end with what feels most appropriate for your sister.

Darren? Pooh! He’s been well and truly replaced by the real and best thing. We couldn’t possibly imagine a better partner for her. They're a perfect match.

Ladies and gentleman please join me in congratulating Mary and her handsome prince Frank. May they continue to share their love story for many, many happy years.

Best Maid Of Honor Speech Examples For A Sister

“Good evening! Allow me to begin by saying hello to those of you who aren’t familiar with me. I’d like to introduce myself; my name is Claire, and I have the honor of being the beautiful bride’s younger sister tonight. Claire asked me to be her maid of honor, and I was pleased by the honor but also a little anxious about the responsibility. I want to start by expressing my gratitude to everyone for coming to celebrate this lovely marriage, especially to those who had to pay for a plane ticket and take time off of work to do so. You have our utmost appreciation. Our bond has always been strong. Of course, we argued, but my memories are filled by laughter, hugs, and secrets shared between us. She has always been my favorite person, despite the fact that we shared a room for almost ten years and I was completely over her when she left for college. During the Christmas, when she finally decided to bring Ben home with her, I realized that this was the end for her. I was aware that there would never be another time when we would have to share a room, and I was also aware that after we completed college, there would never be an opportunity for us to share an apartment together. Because the reality was that just two months into her first year of college, she had already found the person who would be her roommate for life. You two are such wonderful examples of people in the world; not only do you deserve each other’s love, but you also serve as an example to all of us. This evening, in addition to the wonderful sister I already have, I was given the gift of a brother, which is a double blessing for me. We applaud you both and hope that you have a very joyful and prosperous life together!”

My sister is not just my best buddy but also my sounding board my confidante and the keeper of my secrets.

“My sister is getting married today, and she asked me to be her maid of honor, which came as a bit of a surprise given how often she scolds me. She has a huge social circle from which to select friends. However, I am confident that she did this out of love for me. In addition, I feel blessed to be a part of this special occasion for these two amazing people. I’ve spent my entire life trying to be like her, right down to the prom dresses I wore and the novels I read. As I’m sure most of you already know, this is probably not shocking news. As a result, I’ve never been comfortable in front of an audience. At this part of the speech, I’m probably supposed to share an embarrassing anecdote about her. However, I recently discovered that she has far more dirt on me than I do on her, so I think we can safely skip that part. I’m very happy for my sister and role model of a lifetime since she looks like a princess today! Raise your glasses with me and let’s cheer to this! Love is more powerful than any other force since it is unseen, yet it can change your life in a moment and bring you greater happiness than any other thing could. Congratulations to the bride and groom! CHEERS!”

A sister is a special kind of double she is at once like us and completely different from us.

“I hope all of you are having a wonderful evening, and I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you and your love partner a life filled with love and happiness. Congratulations on finding such a perfect day to celebrate your love. I have no doubt that life will bring you a great deal of joy in the years to come. The bride and groom deserve a lifetime of love and happiness, so let’s raise our glasses to them!”

If you dig deep enough you can find fascinating stories hidden inside any sister bond.

“Hello, I’m Emily, and as you may know, I’m the bride’s younger sister. As time went on and we were both getting older, I had a strong desire to become just like her. I’m sure I was a bit annoying since I constantly wanted to follow along wherever she went and have whatever she had, but those were the things I wanted to. She instilled in me a sense of empathy, generosity, and the will to strive for the best in life. As I got older, I wanted to be just like her in every way—beautiful, kind, intelligent, and successful. Raise your glasses to the bride and groom, and may all the love and happiness in the world be theirs for the rest of their lives!”

Im the big sister. I want to make sure she has everything even if I have nothing. Its hard Thats what counts

“Good day, ladies and gentlemen. The wedding of my best friend and sister is today, and I couldn’t be happier that you could all be here to celebrate with us. I’ll admit that, as the maid of honor, I’m a little anxious. Girls might be competitive, but we were never that way. I was content to live in her shadow because I knew she was truly special. So, today, I am glad beyond words that she has decided to get married and begin this wondrous journey. It was clear to me that [Groom] was the one since she brought him up in every single one of our conversations. Always “Yeah, the groom likes…” was the standard response. “Well, [Bride], you’re right…” It didn’t take me long to figure out that she was hopelessly in love, and that eventually we’d end up here. If you could please raise a glass with me, I’d really appreciate that. In honor of the coolest couple I know! We wish you the best of luck in your new life together as husband and wife. Have a beautiful love that lasts forever. Don’t forget that you can always count on me as a listening ear and a buddy, sis.”

To have a sister is to be someone you recognize from another film one in which you play the lead role.

“To begin, I’d like to express my gratitude for everyone’s presence today. I am (Bride’s) sister, as most of you already know. It’s one of the luckiest breaks in life to have a sibling you can count on, like a sister. The [bride] always wished she could be more like me. However, I find many qualities in her worth admiring. I’ve seen her develop into the stunning woman she is today. Being her older sister is a great honour. As time went on, our bond became stronger than ever. We were constantly getting into trouble, and I can vividly recall wondering if there would ever be a guy who would be courageous enough to be with someone as wild as my sister. Now we can finally see him! Let’s all raise our glasses and congratulate the newlyweds! Cheers!”

Without her Im blind. She enhances my hearing. Im incomplete without her. I could do without an arm or a leg but not my sister

“Good evening to all, Please allow me to give a warm greeting to you all and express my gratitude to [bride and groom] for inviting us to join in this joyous occasion. If you don’t already know me, let me introduce myself: I’m Angela. Just in case you were wondering if you heard that right, yes, I am the older sister of [bride]. I know, it’s hard to believe. However, enough about me; today is all about my lovely sister and her hubby. We’re a bit on the free-spirited side, and this is the first wedding in our family, so there have been tears and tantrums, but that was just me attempting to compose this toast. Of course, [Bride] has always epitomized calm and grace. They say that a deep river runs still, and that’s exactly what you’ll get with my younger sister. Who You will occasionally see a flash of her depths beneath the surface, which is incredibly elegant and calm. I wish you all the best!  You’ll find joy and love no matter where life leads you. Please raise your glasses and toast the happy couple!”

I wish you the best Youll always discover joy and love. Cheers to the happy couple

Wishing you a great evening! Before I go any further, let me introduce myself to everyone who doesn’t know me. Hello, everyone; I’m Sophia, and I’m really excited to be introducing myself as the lovely bride’s younger sister. My sister has just tied the knot. And I am convinced that (Groom) is the ideal partner for her. And today I’ve come to the conclusion that all she really needs is a partner who will love her despite all of her quirks and eccentricities, and that’s all she really needs. Their dedication to one another serves as an example to all of us of what constitutes “real love.” To celebrate the wonderful accomplishments of this couple, let us all raise our glasses.

The role of sister in our family is that of first friend and second mother.

“There are a lot of reasons to fall in love with [Bride]. Her intelligence, kindness, and generosity are all wonderful qualities, but I think the quality that I admire most about her is her sense of humor. Sister, you have always had the capability to attract the attention of everyone in the room, and you are looking even more beautiful than usual tonight. Our attention now shifts to the [Groom]. The first thing that came my to mind when I met the [Groom] was that he was one of the few persons I’ve ever met who could match the intelligence and humor of the [Bride] . On the other hand, it wasn’t until [insert anecdote] that I knew he was [Bride’s] true love that I understood he was her soul mate. It’s been wonderful getting to know you and seeing how well you complement my dear sister in every way. Thank you for loving her in the way that she deserves to be loved”.

Your sister start to think you dont love her if you dont annoy her occasionally for no reason.

“I wish you all a pleasant evening, My sincere thanks to [bride and groom] for inviting us to share in this happy occasion brings me great pleasure. I just wanted to take a moment today to compliment them on what a stunning couple they are. People like to talk about fairy tales, but maintaining genuine relationships requires a significant amount of effort. The bride and groom deserve praise and congratulations for their decision to invest in one other and put in the effort to become the greatest versions of themselves that they can be for one another. I have no choice but to applaud and congratulate the bride and groom on their decision to invest in each other and put in the effort to be the greatest versions of themselves that they can be for one another. This right here, ladies and gentlemen, is true love! A happy marriage, in the words of Mignon McLaughlin, needs “falling in love many times, always with the same person.” I’d want to raise a glass to my sister, who is also my best friend, as well as her other half. I love both of you!”

My sister is the person I can always count on to be there for me when I need her she is just my everything.

Good day to everyone, I am one of the bridesmaids here at this wedding as well as the sister of the bride, and I just wanted to express how happy and fortunate I feel to be able to share in the joy of the [bride] and [groom’s] big day with all of you. The way things are done today makes everything appear simple. Well, why wouldn’t it be considering that I helped arrange the wedding (laughs). The [Bride] and [Groom] carefully prepared every aspect of their wedding, from the stunning ceremony to the reception, including the menu, the music, and the decorations at this location. And a significant amount of time was spent trying on dresses and shopping for new ones. When you get a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes, you have a better understanding of how much effort is actually put into preparing a wedding. I have to say that in spite of the many late nights and long hours that were spent working on this wedding, everything came out looking just stunning. Please join me in giving the [Bride] and the [Groom] a big round of applause. Thank you so much for having such a beautiful day, [Bride] and [Groom]! I will raise a toast to the two of you and wish my best wishes for happiness and success in your future life together. I pray that each day brings the two of you an abundance of joy, love, and laughter.

maid of honor speech best friend

It’s hard to keep calm when your best friend is getting married! This is her day when you can tell just how happy you are that she found her one and only! Don’t be afraid to get a little emotional. Celebrate your feelings by adding some inspiring wedding wishes into your maid of honor speech for a best friend and don’t forget to drink in your good friend’s honor!

If you haven’t had the chance to meet me yet, my name is X. (Bride) and I have been best friends for about 10 years. We met in high school gym class, and we couldn’t stand each other at first. As you can see, things eventually changed for the better.
When (Bride) first asked me to be her Maid of Honor I felt flattered. But as the big day approached, she also told me to give a speech and a toast. I’m kind of the shy type and tried my best to get out of it. But, as (Groom) can tell you, it’s almost impossible to tell (Bride) No and get away with it.
I wanted to tell you both how absolutely spectacular you look today. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better-looking couple (except for maybe my boyfriend and I).
And I hope you’re all having a lovely evening and I’d like to I wish you two all the love and happiness in the world. How blessed you are to celebrate your love on this beautiful day. I know there are many happy years ahead for you. Let’s all raise our glasses to the bride and groom, and wish them a lifetime of love and happiness!
I never had a sister, but (Bride) has been like a sister to me for all these years. We have similar tastes, we like similar clothes… I knew (Bride) had found the one when (Groom) walked into her life. Well, I’m fine with that – she saw him first! Actually, you could see that it was love at first, second, and third sight. He is her Prince Charming and it seems to me he gives her all she needs – a strong arm, a sympathetic ear, and his credit card.
I met (Bride) 6 years ago, as we tried to survive in the concrete jungle of NY. To thrive there, your tribe is essential. We are quite protective of each other, so I was a bit skeptical of (Groom) when he first came into the picture. But as time goes by, I can’t imagine anyone else but him to be her one and only. They say that anyone can be passionate, but it takes a real pair of lovers to be silly. Well, together, (Bride) and (Groom) are two of the goofiest people I know.
Hello everyone, my name is X, and by my dress, you can tell that I am the Maid of Honor today. For many years, we have been through thick and thin, and we have shared many memories. Today is another great day to add to our collection of sweet memories, so I’m really looking forward to the cake!
I know you will have challenges as all relationships do. But you know what’s great about love and relationships and marriages? it is learning to grow together. Caring and sharing, and lots of tenderness. And maybe a bit of patience, or maybe even a lot. So let’s raise our glasses to the power of love, that makes all these wonderful things happen!
Today you start a completely new chapter of your lives. What can I say? Never forget the two most important replies: ‘you’re right, dear’ and ‘okay, buy it’. Love and cherish each other! These two are a rare find in today’s world. Here’s to the groom who has a bride so fair, and here’s to the bride with a groom who is so rare.

How to write a maid of honor speech for sister?

Figuring out how to write a maid of honor speech for your sister can be truly confusing. To help put things into perspective, take a look at this great list of maid of honor speech for sister ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

As you may know, I am the bride’s younger sister. As we were growing up, I always wanted to be like her. Do the things she did, have the things she had –  I was probably a bit annoying, I always wanted to tag along. She taught me how to care, how to share, and how to try to reach for the stars. And as I grew up I wanted to be just as beautiful, caring, smart, and successful as her.
(Bride) has always set an example for me to follow. Over the years she has shown me how to love and care. Today she shows me how to find a best friend, a partner, and a true lover, all in one person. I hope that I am just as lucky someday.
It’s a great happiness to find someone who loves you as much as (Groom) loves my sister. Today, I want to thank both of you for being a part of my life, and to celebrate the love you both share.
Like many sisters, we weren’t always best friends. I remember fights, screaming, and door-slamming, but I couldn’t have picked a better sister and a friend. Now that we are older, I can finally admit how happy I am to have grown up with such a great sister.
Having a sister is one of the greatest things in life. Having a little sister is even better because I liked to be bossy. (Bride) always wanted to be a bit more like me… But actually, there is so much that I admire about her! I have watched her grow into the gorgeous woman that she is. It is a great honor for me to be her big sister!
First of all, I want to thank you all for being here with us today. As most of you know I am (Bride’s) sister. As we grew, we were as close as can be. We were always in trouble and I remember wondering if there will be a guy brave enough for someone as wild as my sister is. Well, here he is!
My sis has just tied the knot. And I do believe that (Groom) is her perfect match. And today I realize that all she needs is a guy who will love her just the way she is, with all her craziness. Their commitment to each other inspires all of us because that’s what we call true love. So let’s raise our glasses to this amazing couple!
I want you to know that it took me 3 weeks to write this speech over and over again. And I couldn’t think of anything perfect enough to describe just how much I love you. I couldn’t find words to define the kind of sister you are to me. This is your big day and there is so much I want to say…
I Googled a lot of maid of honor speech examples. The one piece of advice I kept finding over and over again was to start off with a quote. I did some research and I think their love is best described by Dr. Seuss: “You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because the reality is finally better than your dreams.”
Love, be true to her; Life, be dear to her; Health, stay close to her; Joy, draw near to her; Fortune, find what you can do for her, Search your treasure house through and through for her, Follow her footsteps the wide world over – And keep her husband always her lover. – By Anna Lewis, from “To the Bride”

Funny Wedding Speeches From Maid Of Honor

maid of honor speech funny

Sometimes the hardest part of being a maid of honor to your bestie might be writing the wedding speech. Speaking with your friend face to face is always easy, however, making toasts or speeches in front of a group of people would be totally different and not as easy. This is why anecdotes and funny wedding speeches maid of honor could help you cruise through your speech while giving the wedding guests a laugh at the same time.

As a close friend of the bride, you would have a lot of material for wedding speeches bridesmaids, you just need to know how to put them all together. A few sample wedding speeches for bridesmaids would give you the right kind of inspiration to get you on your way.

Well, for those of you who I haven’t had the chance to meet yet, my name is [NAME]. [BRIDE] and I have been best friends for around the last 10 years. We first met at work one day, when she stole my carrot cake out of the fridge in the lunchroom and I threw away her pineapple yogurt cartons in revenge. I never had a sister, but [BRIDE] has been my stand-in sister for all these years. You could say we are even closer than sisters. We don’t fight like sisters, but we do wear each other’s clothes. Somehow she can still fit into my clothes but I can’t fit into hers anymore. I’m sure that is just because her dryer must be shrinking them. I knew [BRIDE] had found the one when [GROOM] walked into her life. Sure, she dated a few guys…after I was done torturing them. But [GROOM] was different. Unlike those jerks, he was kind and thoughtful. And he had a job. You could see that it was love at first, second, and third sight. Clearly [GROOM] is charming and it seems to me he offers her what she needs – a strong arm, a kind ear, and an American Express Black Card. I trust [BRIDE] and [GROOM] completely. I remember the time I asked them to watch my dog Benji when I went skiing in Europe. They were so nice to help out. I got back and Benji was so happy to see me. He was 40 pounds lighter and now he sees a therapist twice a week. Of course, we are having fun today. The test of this relationship will be over the long term. Will she still love [GROOM] when he leaves his underwear on the floor and cuts his toenails at the dinner table? The answer is no. God, please, disgusting. No, seriously, I know they will have challenges as all relationships do. And [GROOM] will learn what all men learn eventually. Keep your wife happy! Happy wife, happy life. No, really, what’s great about love and relationships and marriage is learning to grow together. The communication it takes to keep a marriage going is massive. But half the fun is working things out, talking, communicating, and launching kitchen appliances at each other – real love. Today has been a great day. Family and friends are here, the sun is shining and the champagne is flowing. And we’ll need it to get through this chicken dinner.

Funny Lines For Maid Of Honor Speech

“As the maid of honor, I’ve been given the responsibility of keeping the bride calm and relaxed throughout the wedding planning process. Which is why I’ve been slipping her Xanax in her coffee every morning.”
“When the bride asked me to be her maid of honor, I was thrilled. But then I realized it meant I had to give a speech in front of all these people. So if I faint halfway through, just drag me off stage and make it look like part of the act.”
“The bride has always been the yin to my yang, the peanut butter to my jelly, the wine to my cheese. And now she’s found her perfect match in the groom. I mean, he’s no cheese, but he’s definitely a nice bottle of red.”

How To Write The Best Maid Of Honor Speech Ever

maid of honor speech how to write

As the maid of honor, it is best that your wedding speech starts with a brief introduction, then talk about the bride, and then end with the couple. You can wrap the speech up beautifully with a wedding toast that they will love.

If you’re planning to deliver one of the best maids of honor speeches of all time, you’ll definitely have to check out this list of DOs and DON’Ts before you get started.

Do: Open your speech with a self-introduction and your relationship with the bride. There are guests at the wedding who might not know you very well. Let them know how much you mean to each other. Don’t: Feel the need to be comical. A sweet, emotional story means so much more than a bunch of silly, inside jokes that everyone might not get. There will be a time and place for your special BFF humor, but leave it for the after-party.

Do: Tell everyone what an amazing person the bride is, how she is ALWAYS there for you, whenever, wherever! Also, it would be a nice opportunity to thank the rest of your girls for being a big part of the special day. Don’t: Make the bride look bad by saying things like “We thought this day would NEVER come.” That might sound funny at the hen party, but the wedding reception is not the place.

Do: Share her love story and how she met the groom and maybe an amusing (but not humiliating) anecdote or two about their courtship. The newlyweds would love to hear such tribute to their love. Don’t: Compare the groom to her former boyfriends. That might bring up some bad feelings and memories and it is definitely not the time or place.

Do: Describe what you love about the groom, his greatest attributes, and how much he means to the bride. You may want to include how the bride has changed(for the better of course) since she met the groom. Speak from your heart and mention how she became happier etc. It’s time to get emotional! Don’t: Be trite and say things to the groom along with the lines of “Call me when you get divorced.” You don’t want people throwing objects or start booing.

Do: Make the toast about BOTH the bride & groom, not just amusing stories of the bride. Usually, it’s a good idea to start the speech by talking about the bride and finish the speech by talking about her and the groom as a couple. Don’t: Get sidetracked and make the speech all about you. It’s HER day, not yours!

Do: Wish them a happy future, filled with love, a lifetime of joy, and so forth. Don’t: End your speech with phrases like “Cheers” and “Drink up!” You want to end on a sentimental note, not a cheesy one!

Writing a Maid of Honor Speech for Your Sister? Use These 11 Tips.

Writing a Maid of Honor Speech for Your Sister? Use These 11 Tips.

Do you need to write a maid of honor speech for your sister?

Queue the overwhelm, anxiety, and panic. Writing a wedding speech for your sister is the most challenging part of being her MOH.

Lucky for you, I’m a professional wedding speech writer. I work with the sister of the bride to craft custom maid of honor speeches .

As you prepare to write your maid of honor speech for your sister, consider these tips.

Tip #1: Think About Why Your Sister Asked You to be Her Maid of Honor

Was it always an unsaid thing that you’d be her maid of honor? Or were you surprised that she asked you?

Really consider why your sister asked you to be her maid of honor. Why you and not one of her friends?

As you contemplate this question, you’ll reflect more deeply on your relationship and bond. Tapping into this energy is a great place to start the speech writing process.

Tip #2: Write from the Viewpoint of Being the Big Sister or Little Sister

Consider your age difference and how this affected your relationship growing up.

Were you the protective big sister who interrogated every date your sister brought home? Why do you feel happy with the person she decided to marry?

Were you the little sister that looked up to the bride throughout your childhood? Describe what qualities you admired in her and how you still admire her as an adult.

Tip #3: Think About Trips You’ve Taken Together

What vacations or road trips have you two gone on together? Travel stories are a great source of speech writing inspiration.

Think about the times when your plans did not work out. What happened? How did your sister react in that moment? Why is that memory special to you now?

My sister and I had planned this huge trip to Paris together to celebrate her college graduation. We thought it would be fun to tour the city on scooters. Sounds idyllic, right?

Wrong. We ended up getting lost outside of the city and had to figure out how to get back to our hotel in the middle of a torrential downpour.

It wasn’t the quintessential Parisian moment I had hoped for, but I’ll never forget the look of pure excitement mixed with panic on my sister’s face that day.

The great thing about a story like this is it accomplishes two things:

It provides an entertaining story that will captivate your guests.

It allows you to introduce a theme. In this case, your sister thrives when plans fall through and she still has fun. Now you can tie this idea from your story into the concept of marriage.

Tip #4: Remember Your Childhood Arguments

What did you two constantly fight about? Has this changed or do you still argue about stealing each other’s clothes?

Everyone loves a window into what the bride was like as a child. These playful stories can be your way of telling a before and after style story.

Tip #5: Use Themes to Organize Your Speech

Discover common themes to tie your speech together.

Here are some theme examples to consider:

Thoughtfulness

Ambitious

Inspirational

Themes are a creative way to connect one story to the next and to tie all of your anecdotes together so they have greater meaning.

For example, a camping trip can just be about a camping trip. Or, it can be about how resourceful your sister is.

bride with her sister.jpg

Tip #6: Just Write The First Draft

Don’t judge yourself. Set your perfectionist tendencies aside so you can just start writing.

Know that the first draft won’t be great but you can edit a poorly written page, you can’t edit a blank page.

So, begin. Get out of your own way and get your thoughts down on paper. It will be a start and you can move forward from there.

Tip #7: Put on Your Editor’s Hat

Now that you’ve written the first draft, edit your work. What’s flowing? What’s not serving the overall idea? Can you cut anything that doesn’t feel emotionally impactful or relevant?

Delete, delete. Rewrite, rewrite.

Tip #8: Balance Humor with Sentimental Tones

Most of the maid of honors that I work with want their speech to get some laughs but they also want their sister to feel really special and loved.

To do this, use what I call the 90/10 rule: 10% of your speech should be playful and humorous while 90% of it should be more serious and sentimental.

Tip #9: Write a Killer Last Line

People may not remember everything you say during your maid of honor speech for your sister but they will remember the last line...if it’s a good one!

Close with a last line that has emotional punch. Even better if your last line mirrors an idea that you introduced earlier in the speech.

Tip #10: Practice Reciting Your Speech for Your Sister

Writing the maid of honor speech for your sister’s wedding is half the work. The other half? Delivering it.

To deliver a knockout MOH speech, practice reciting it out loud three to six times.

Focus on your speech pattern. Are you loud enough? Are you pausing for effect in the right areas? Are you changing the inflection in your voice for certain words?

It helps to practice in front of a friend. This will provide you with constructive feedback and encourage you to overcome any nerves you might have around speaking in front of people.

Tip #11: Hire A Maid of Honor Speech Writer

You do not have to attempt to write a wedding speech for your sister all by yourself. You can work with a professional to write your maid of honor speech .

You should consider collaborating with a writer if you’ve ever thought…

I’m overwhelmed with writing a maid of honor speech for my sister.

I have so many stories and I have no idea how to connect them.

My sister is so special to me but I don’t know how to deliver a speech that will do justice to how I feel.

I have so much anxiety just thinking about having to give this speech!

Get in touch and I promise, I’ll write a maid of honor speech that your sister will adore.

PIN IT FOR LATER

Love my vows Katelyn!!!! It’s such a relief to have this out of the way so I can focus on all the rest of the stuff I need to do!  You were my very favorite part of the process!! Your experience and confidence in the process took all the stress out of writing my vows!

— Natalie, Florida

I thought the process was outstanding. You did a great job communicating, and I thought the turnaround time for editing was perfect. I also thought the video interview was great in that it was personal and meaningful!

I am a storyteller, not a speechwriter. I was incredibly intimidated about writing one.

So thankful to find Katelyn to get my thoughts all in order. Very proud of how the speech came out. Looking forward to giving it!

— Jennifer Whitley, Texas

I had such a wonderful experience working with Katelyn. She truly helped mold perfect vows that I can’t wait to tell my fiancé on our wedding day!  Katelyn was friendly, sweet, and super easy to work with. I will definitely be calling her up if I have to give another speech in the near future.

— Jordanne, California

Katelyn was professional, easy to talk to, and made the interviewing process fun. She came well prepared with unexpected and thought-provoking questions to get a better understanding of our love story and who we are as a couple.

She was a pleasure to work with and made the vow writing process enjoyable.

— Kimi Kinsey, South Carolina

Working with Katelyn on my maid of honor toast was an incredible experience. She really took the time to understand my relationship with my best friend and used my responses to craft a toast that put my thoughts and feelings into words in a way that I never would have been able to do on my own.

Before working with Katelyn, I was nervous and stressed about giving (and writing) such a big, important speech. But now I’m so relieved that it’s done, and I honestly can’t wait to stand up and tell everyone exactly what my best friend means to me.

— Allyssa, New Jersey

I didn’t actually know this service existed until I discovered Katelyn! It was such a fun experience to video chat with her about my best friend who is getting married this summer.

I don’t have to stress about writing this a few weeks before my best friend’s wedding. Thank you so much and I can’t wait to read it at my best friend’s wedding!

The Best Maid Of Honor Speech For A Sister

a beautiful woman with long black hair gives a speech

1. “Good evening! First of all, I want to thank all of you for coming and celebrating this beautiful new marriage, especially all those who had to buy a plane ticket and take off work to be here. We appreciate you so much.

For those who don’t know me, allow me to introduce myself. My name is X, and I’m the little sister of the stunning bride tonight. And when (Bride) asked me to be her maid of honor, I was so honored although slightly nervous about this task right now.

Our relationship has always been solid. We fought, of course, but my memories are filled with giggles and hugs and secrets. Although we shared a room for nearly ten years and were utterly sick of each other when she moved off to college, she’s always been my favorite person.

When she brought (Groom) home that Christmas, I knew this was it for her. I knew we’d never share a room again; I knew that I’d never get to share an apartment with her after we graduated college. Because the truth was, she had already found her forever roommate just two months into freshman year.

Both of you are such good people, deserving of each other’s love and an inspiration to all of us. I have an incredible sister already, and I’ve been doubly blessed this evening by gaining a brother too.

We salute you and wish you both an incredibly happy long life together.”

2. “So, my sister is getting married today, and I’ll admit I was a bit surprised when she asked me to be the maid of honor because she’s always telling me off! And she has tons of friends that she could’ve chosen. But I know she did it because she loves me as much as I love her. And I am honored to be here to celebrate these two beautiful souls.

I’ve emulated her my whole life, from prom dresses to hairstyles to favorite books. I’m sure this comes as no surprise to most of you. {giggles} So, I’ve never really been good at public speaking ; it’s pretty terrifying. But I think this is the part of the speech that I am supposed to tell some embarrassing story about [Bride], but I realized she has a lot more dirt on me, so we’ll just skip that part.

Today, my sister and lifelong mentor looks like a fairytale princess, and I wish her all the happiness in the world.

Please raise your glasses and join me in a toast. Love is a force that’s more impressive than any other because it’s invisible, it can’t be seen, but it can transform you in a single moment, and it will offer you more joy than any material possession ever could. To the bride and groom! CHEERS!”

3. “I hope you’re all having a lovely evening, and I’d like to wish you two all the love and happiness in the world. How blessed you are to celebrate your love on this beautiful day. I know there are many happy years ahead for you.

Let’s all raise our glasses to the bride and groom and wish them a lifetime of love and happiness!”

4. “Hello ladies and gentlemen, I am so happy you are all here today to celebrate the wedding of my sister, my best friend . I’m the maid of honor, and I’ll be honest, I’m kind of nervous {giggles}. You know girls are always competitive, but we were never like that; I recognized she was so wonderfully exceptional in many ways and was happy to be in her shadow. So today, I am beyond delighted that she has chosen to get married and embark on this wondrous journey.

I knew [Groom] was the one because every time we talked, she referred to him on every topic. It was always “Yeah, [Groom] likes…” or “Well [Groom] said…” It didn’t take long for me to realize that she was madly in love and that one day, we’d be here.

Please join me in a toast. To our newlyweds , [Bride] & [Groom], the most exceptional couple I know. I wish you a lifetime of love and happiness. And remember, sis, I’m only a phone call away!”

5. “As you may know, I am the bride’s younger sister. As we were growing up, I always wanted to be like her. Do the things she did, have the things she had – I was probably a bit annoying, and I always wanted to tag along. She taught me how to care, share, and try to reach for the stars. And as I grew up, I wanted to be just as beautiful, caring, smart, and successful as her. I’m so happy for her because she found her happiness. She found the love of her life.

I also wanted to thank you all for coming, this wedding party wouldn’t be the same without each one of you. Let’s raise our glasses to the happy couple !”

6. “There are so many reasons to love [Bride]. She’s smart, kind, and generous, but I think my favorite thing about her is her sense of humor . Sis, you have always had the ability to light up the room, and you are so stunning tonight.

Now, onto [Groom]. My first impression after meeting [Groom] was that they were one of the only people I’ve ever met who could keep up with [Bride’s] wit and good humor. However, it wasn’t until [insert anecdote] that I realized that he was [Bride’s] soul mate. It’s been such a pleasure getting to know you as an individual and as the perfect partner for my beloved sister. Thank you for loving her the way she deserves.”

7. “ I would like to say today what a beautiful couple they make! People talk of fairy tales, but real relationships take a lot of work. I must applaud and congratulate the bride and the groom on investing in each other and putting in the work to be the best possible versions of themselves for each other. This is true love , folks! As Mignon McLaughlin said, ‘ A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person .’

A toast to my sister, my best friend, and her other (but not better) half. Love you both!”

the woman sits in a chair and gives a speech to the newlyweds

8. “Hi everyone, I am [Bride’s] sister. As many of you all know, the two of us come from a big, happy, wacky family. Through all our years together, my many siblings and I have loved each other with everything that we have, but we would also often fight each other with all of our strength, especially when it came to sharing, taking turns, and agreeing on who got to be in charge.

Throughout the years, there have been a lot of laughs and a few fights, but my brothers, sisters, and I have always maintained our shared belief that a family is life’s greatest blessing of them all.

When [Bride] finally introduced all of us to [Groom], I was a little worried for him. Maybe we would be too big of a family, or we would scare him away. But he was brave and ended up fitting right in, and now I can proudly say that he is one of us. He belongs to our clan now, and I certainly hope he feels that way.

Welcome to the family, [Groom.] To [Bride] and [Groom,] may they keep our family growing one day.”

9. “[Bride], I can’t believe this is your wedding day and that you’re standing there in such a gorgeous dress. You always used to say that even though we’re identical twins , you were the prettier one. I always smacked you for comments like that, but today, I know that it’s true. You’re a beautiful bride.

[Groom], I’m in awe of the love you and my sister have for each other – the gentle touches, the little smiles. I’m so happy you’re now a part of my sister’s life, that you’re part of our family. You guys have something extraordinary, though, and I know that it will only grow deeper with time.

When I look back on our time growing up, I recall so many moments full of giggles when we should have been sleeping, sneaking out of the house when we should have been sleeping, writing scary stories when we should have been sleeping … There seems to be a pattern here.

Mom and dad spent many nights yelling at us to go to bed and then threatening to keep us from our toys, then our music, then our friends. I guess the threats worked for a while, but we just couldn’t help ourselves.

I just wanted you to know that there’s no one else I’d rather have as my sister. You were the perfect partner in crime, and I will admit, there was an occasion or two that I pretended to be you so you’d take the blame for some devious plan of mine.

To my beautiful sister and handsome brother- in-law , I wish you years of happiness, and I can’t wait to see what the future brings.”

10. “The bride is my younger sister – I bet most of you know that. That means that she spent most of our childhood annoying me, and that practice will, I hope, finally end with this day.

But that also means that I’m super-protective of her and that I wouldn’t let anyone break her heart. So, it’s natural that I was suspicious of this young man over here.

Luckily, he cleared all of my doubts away the first time he came over to meet the family. When I saw that he didn’t run for his life after meeting all of us, I knew that he really loved my sister.

And I’ve known that to this day. You see *talks to the guests*, these two people share that once-in-a-lifetime kind of love. You know, the one you only see in movies.

This wasn’t just love at first sight – it’s love at every sight. I guarantee you that this kind of love will never stop.

So, let’s drink to that. To their eternity together!”

11. “Hello, everyone. Thank you all for coming together to celebrate the love that [Bride and Groom] share. Many of you know that I am [Bride’s] older sister . As most older sisters are, I have always been overprotective of her, even before she was born. When she was born, she was my baby sister.

I was determined to look after her, take care of her, and protect her, though I did push her around a little bit. But if someone else messed with her, then they had to answer to me.

As we grew older, the need to protect her didn’t go away. I wanted to always have her back at school and throughout her relationships and friendships with people. I always wanted her to know that I’d be there for her, especially when things got tough.

And then one day, [Bride] met [Groom.] I came to realize that this person really and truly cared about her. Not only did he care about her, but he also loved her. From the way he looks at her to the way he always tries to make sure that she is okay, there is no mistaking his love.

And I will admit, it was hard to let go of my sister a little. We have always been inseparable. But I am so happy that she found someone who cares about her so much. I know that [Groom] will keep her happy. And she will keep him happy as well.”

12. “I wanted to start by thanking [Bride] and [Groom] for inviting me to be a part of their special day. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is X, and I’m the maid of honor.

And, I’m also the proud sister of the bride. We’ve been there for each other so many times it’s hard to count. We laughed and cried together. We are really happy to experience some of the best moments of our lives, and I am happy to have such a great sister and, most importantly, best friend as [Bride]. She is everything one could wish for in a sister – and I know that she will be a great wife. It makes me extremely happy to see just how much she has changed since [Groom] came into her life.

I also want to thank you, [Groom], for making my little sis, my BFF, so happy!

Before this moment, you have been many things for her: a friend, a companion, a lover… But now it’s the start of a completely new stage of your lives together. So today, we celebrate your beautiful love story and the road that lies ahead of you, and I am happy to be here today to witness the beginning. Everyone, please raise your glasses with me to the new Mr. and Mrs. X, to the happy couple ! Congratulations!”

13. “As some of you know, I am fiercely protective of [Bride], I would do anything for her, and she is one of the most important people in my life. Over the years, we have laughed together, cried together, and had so many amazing memories. I am truly blessed to have someone like her in my life.

Since I am so protective of her, you can imagine how skeptical of [Groom I was when he first came into the picture. I wondered what his intentions were. Was he good enough for such a unique and special person?

I soon learned that [Groom] is just as amazing as [Bride.] He worships her and would do anything to see her smile. They complement each other perfectly. They are two twin souls that were destined to find each other. And I could not be happier for the two of them.”

14. “Hi everyone, I am the bride’s sister and one of the bridesmaids at this wedding, and I just wanted to say how happy and lucky I am to be here to celebrate [Bride] and [Groom’s] big day with everyone. Today, everything looks effortless. Well, why wouldn’t it be when I participated in the wedding planning (laughs).

From the beautiful wedding ceremony, the food, music, and decorations at this venue, every little detail was planned by [Bride] and [Groom.] And lots of time was spent shopping for dresses and doing fittings. When you get to peek behind the scenes, you see how much work really goes into planning a wedding. There were a lot of late nights and hours spent working on this wedding, and I have to say that it all turned out quite beautifully. Let’s all give a round of applause for [Bride] and [Groom.]

[Bride] and [Groom,] thank you for such a wonderful day. I raise my glass to the two of you and wish you nothing but the best in your life together. May each day be full of love and laughter between the two of you.”

5. “Growing up, [Bride] was a little cynical. She did not really believe in true love or fairytale endings. I, on the other hand, was the more romantic one. I would tell her, much to her annoyance, that she only felt that way because she had not met the right one yet. And guess what? I was right.”

6. “My sis has just tied the knot. And I do believe that [Groom] is her perfect match . And today, I realize that all she needs is a guy who will love her just the way she is, with all her craziness. 7. “As you all know, this beautiful bride is my sister. She is one of the kindest, most generous people that I know. And now, she is no longer a girl but a woman who has met her equal, another person in this world that is as deserving of her as she is of him. Together, they make a wonderful pair, and I know that they will make each other so happy in their new life together.”

8. “Like many sisters, we weren’t always best friends . I remember fights, screaming, and door-slamming, but I couldn’t have picked a better sister and friend. Now that we are older, I can finally admit how happy I am to have grown up with such a great sister.”

It has been a beautiful day, and we all still have plenty of dancing and celebrating to do.”

16. “With the bride and groom, I see this kind of love. For all the time they have spent getting to know each other, they still continue to fall in love as if they are still in the honeymoon stage. To never get tired of one’s smile, the little gestures of thoughtfulness that show that they still care, even after all this time. That is real love .”

17. “ Having a sister is one of the greatest things in life. Having a little sister is even better because I like to be bossy. What Should I Say In My Sister’s Wedding Speech?

a woman with long brown hair gives a speech at a wedding

You should tell her whatever lies in your heart because that’s what your sister and all the other wedding guests will appreciate the most.

If you want to talk about childhood memories, go with that. If you want to summarize the bride and groom’s love story , do that.

If you just want to tell her how truly happy you are for her, then just say that to her and offer your well wishes for the happy couple .

It doesn’t matter if you aren’t good with public speaking as long as you get out everything that has been lying in your heart ever since your sis told you that she’s getting married.

Also, another speech tip of huge importance: try to avoid inside jokes . Including them in your MOH speech for the bridal shower or the bachelorette party may have been funny for the girls, but there will be more people at the wedding reception, and I’m not sure they’ll all like it.

And, of course, at the end of your maid of honor toast, raise your glass, invite all the other wedding guests to do the same, and wish the happy couple a long, blessed, and happy life .

Other Important Tips To Remember

When you plan to deliver a sister’s wedding speech, make sure you keep the moments as lively and simple as possible. Don’t be afraid to be funny , and people will always love the heartfelt side too.

Start by stating the relationship you share, if you are older or younger, to the bride. Having done this, extend a few words of congratulations to the couple on behalf of your family and remember to thank your guests and relatives for coming.

Keep it light and fun.

“All right, good afternoon, everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Lindsay, and I am a younger sister of the bride. Those of you who do know me, I’ll have the usual, just put the butter by my purse. I would like to congratulate the other Lenny, Lenny, the number one for her Oscar nomination. Thank you for making us beautiful today, taking the time out, and thank you for telling Glenn Klaus “No” and Emmy “Yes.” We appreciate it. The day that Emmy asked me to be her maid of honor… actually, she never asked me to be her maid of honor. I just sort of assumed the role. So hopefully, I’m the person you want sitting next to you; if not, I’m sorry there are no refunds.

Anyway, when I started thinking about a speech, I was really nervous, and I even contemplated asking her if she would mind if I didn’t speak. I have several anxieties. But I quickly scrapped that idea because, for those of you who know my sister, you know that she does not take no for an answer. I can elaborate with a short story to help pin up a better picture for you. When Emmy first told me she was moving to Ireland, for those of you who know my sister, the conversation was something like, “Hello, you’re what? Steve begged you? And he’s, “Jeez!” Yeah, great. No, I don’t think dad will kill him.”

Steve’s version of it went something like, “You’re sister, she’s the most determined woman I’ve ever met.”

“What? What do you mean?”

“Well, she came for a three-day visit, and she had three job interviews lined up, and she had an apartment.” So, there are two sides to every story, but she’s a very determined young lady. Growing up with Emmy as a big sister really helped paved the way for me in high school. “Oh, are you Emmy Thorne’s sister?” “Yes.” Well, that pretty much meant that if I had any grade below an A, they questioned whether or not we were indeed related.

And they would do the same for your brother too. So, that was tough. But not only was Emmy an academic star but she never really joined anything else in school except the captain of the dance team. She is the head of math leads, president of the student council, basketball player, volleyball player, a typical underachiever. And then went to North Western on top of it. On a more serious note, Emmy is a type of sister that everyone probably wishes that they had; I’m not going to cry. As far back as I can remember, you’ve been the voice of reason, my biggest cheerleader, and my role model.

Above all, you’ve been a great friend. Even though she’s far away, she’s still the first person I call with good news or bad or someone just when I need advice or someone to listen to me bitch. She’s that person. I honestly don’t know what I would do without you. Steven, oh Steven… I’m not going to embarrass Steve because Johnny is going to handle that. I’d like to welcome you to our family officially. We all love you very much. I’ve always hoped that Emmy can find someone that can keep up with her, someone who challenges her, makes her laugh, enjoys the same thing she does. Above all, I would hope she found someone who can put her in her place, and you are that someone.

One of Emmy’s best friends back home refers to you as gentleman Steve, and that name couldn’t be any more fitting, and dad I thought sober for my speech. You’re a true gentleman, and Emmy couldn’t have picked a sexier accent to listen to if you ask me. To finish up, Steve, I would like to share a few tips with you, which are supposed to guarantee a long and happy marriage. Number one, when you’re wrong, admit it; when you’re right, shut up. The best way to remember your anniversary is to forget it once. A happy wife is a happy life. And finally, Steven, never be afraid that Emmy will leave you, she has spent years training you, and she will not give that up.

With that said, I’d like everyone to please raise a glass; I’d like to make a toast to Emmy and Steve. I wish you a lifetime of happiness. May the road be long, and the party never end.”

A Wonderful Sister Of The Bride Speech For The Sentimental

“Good evening! First of all, I want to thank all of you for coming and celebrating this beautiful new marriage, especially all those who had to buy a plane ticket and take off work to be here. We appreciate you so much.

For those who don’t know me, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Claire, and I’m the little sister of the stunning bride tonight. And when Claire asked me to be her maid of honor, I was so honored although slightly nervous about this task right now.

Our relationship has always been solid. We fought, of course, but my memories are filled with giggles and hugs and secrets. Although we shared a room for nearly ten years and were utterly sick of each other when she moved off to college, she’s always been my favorite person.

When she brought Ben home that Christmas, I knew this was it for her.

We salute you and wish you both an incredibly happy and long life together.”

Double Trouble, And Twice The Fun – A Twin Sister Wedding Speech

“Good evening, everyone, and thank you so much for being here. My name is Cara, and I’m the bride’s sister, twin, and best friend – Ainsley agrees, just ask her! I said that I’d make an allowance for her new husband and begrudgingly keep my visits to three times a week. But I still get first dibs on the comfy blue couch!

Welcome to the Family

Ainsley, I can’t believe this is your wedding day and that you’re standing there in such a gorgeous dress. You always used to say that even though we’re identical twins, you were the prettier one. I always smacked you for comments like that, but today, I know that it’s true. You’re a beautiful bride.

Tristen, I’m in awe of the love you and Ainsley have for each other. The gentle touches, the little smiles. I’m so happy you’re now a part of my sister’s life, that you’re part of our family. You guys have something extraordinary, though, and I know that it will only grow deeper with time.

Ainsley, when I look back on our time growing up, I recall so many moments full of giggles when we should have been sleeping, sneaking out of the house when we should have been sleeping, writing our scary stories when we should have been sleeping … there seems to be a pattern here.

Mom and Dad spent many nights yelling at us to go to bed and then threatening to keep us from our toys, then our music, then our friends. I guess the threats worked for a while, but we just couldn’t help ourselves.

Ainsley, there’s no one else I’d rather have as my sister. You were the perfect partner in crime, and I will admit, there was an occasion or two that I pretended to be you so you’d take the blame for some devious plan of mine.

To my sister and brother-in-law, I wish you years of happiness, and I can’t wait to see what the future brings.”

Heartfelt Sister of The Bride In Under 5 Minutes

No one ever said a wedding speech has to be long. In fact, most experts recommend that you keep it under 5 minutes. Here is a wonderful example of a younger sister giving a heartfelt, emotional speech with a little humor in under 5 minutes. Watch it here.

Older Sister Of The Bride Wedding Speech Sample

“Welcome, everyone, I’m Nadia, and you’re all looking absolutely lovely tonight! But of course, no one can beat my little sister, the bride Naomi. In case you haven’t guessed yet, I’m the older sister of this stunning bride, and I am totally ready to crush all the other speeches for first place.

To The Blushing Bride

Naomi, what can I say. You’re so gorgeous in that dress. I know you have dreamt of this day since you were a little girl, and I have too. But I never imagined in a trillion years that you could be so unbelievably radiant on this day.

Ladies & Gentlemen, Naomi is wearing our mother’s wedding gown that she wore to wed our father 30 years ago. Of course, being the older sister, I tried to fit into it for my own wedding a few years ago, but I quickly realized that it wasn’t meant to be. Clearly, I took after our daddy’s side of the family.

Naomi, she’s the spitting image of our mom at that age, so of course, the gown fits her perfectly. And although I was saddened that I couldn’t walk down the aisle in mom’s dress, today I am over the moon to see how stunning Naomi looks wearing it. We were just 11 and 14 years old when Mama left us, and Naomi wearing her gown today gives incredible tribute to our love for her.

Ideally Suited in Love and Life

And of course, today there wasn’t just one beautiful dress at this wedding; there are two. Naomi and her new wife Eva were captivating standing hand in hand under the gorgeous floral arch in their stunning gowns.

Eva, I see how much Naomi has blossomed since first meeting you. I see how much you both bring out each other’s best traits.

I remember when Naomi was nine years old, she ran to her room, closed the door, and several hours later emerged with this incredible poster full of whirls, swirls, and intricate flowers. The colors were gorgeous; it was truly amazing.

At the time, Mama was sick, but she knew that Naomi had talent. She squeezed my hand and told me to promise to do everything possible to ensure Naomi went to art school. And trust me when I say no was not an option.

Dad and I did what we could to save, cut back on things so that we could fulfill the promise we made. Naomi went off to art school, found her purpose in life, and quickly met her ladylove. Seeing the two of you share your love for art and the incredible talents you both have inspires us all.

Hand-in-hand, with their paint brushes, pencils, and sketchbooks, Naomi and Eva are ready to accomplish great things. The world is a vast place, but knowing that they will have each other’s backs throughout life will make the journey just a little bit sweeter.

To Naomi and Eva.”

Getting Over Fear Of Public Speaking – A Great Sister Of The Bride Speech

There are a lot of people that have a tremendous fear of speaking in public. In this next sister of the bride speech example, Michaela overcomes her anxiety and speech fear and presents a great sister of the bride speech.

“Good evening everyone, I would like to welcome you all and say thank you to Linsey and Neil for allowing us to share their special day.

For those of you who don’t know who I am, my name is Michaela. I am Linsey’s very proud older sister, and just in case you were wondering if you heard right, you did, it’s true I am the older sister,.. hard to believe I know,… but that’s enough about me, today it’s all about my beautiful little sister and her husband.

This is the first wedding in our family, we tend to be a little on the free-spirited side of life, and of course, there have been the usual tears and tantrums, but that was just me trying to write this speech.

Linsey, of course, has been the epitome of calm and decorum. It’s true what they say,” that a deep river runs still,” and that’s what you get with my little sister. Who On the surface is very glamorous and calm, but you will get a flash of her depths every now and then.

I once read a quote that said,” A sister is a gift to the heart, a friend to the spirit, a golden thread to the meaning of life,” and that is what Linsey has been to me.

I was so excited when Linzy was born and even more so when I held her for the first time. She had massive blue eyes, and as I looked into those huge eyes, I remember wondering what our lives would hold.

Little did I realize it would mean sleepless nights, sharing a bedroom for the next 18 years, regular loss of my clothes from MY part of the wardrobe, being woken up on Saturday mornings by her singing like a Diva into her fisher price tape recorder to Whitney Houston’s ‘I will always love you. ..’ and then playing it back over and over again. To be honest, I still laugh about that.

She has always been creative, and it appeared at an early age. She loved to draw; she drew all the time, on the wall, on her bedsheets, on my bed sheets, on her arms, up her legs, and anywhere else she could reach. Fortunately, she also loved to bathe! She would spend hours in there, ducking and diving under the water; well, it would remove the pen, but she would end up so cold that she would be shivering.

As she has grown older, she managed to place her creativity into more constructive things, and her talent has taken her through university, on to teaching, and then on to her own ‘Linzy Lou’ creations.

When Linsey met Neil, I immediately noticed something different about her…. There was a twinkle in her eye! One I hadn’t seen before. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, I thought to myself.

Although it took Neil a very LONG time to realize what he was missing out on, a few Facebook traumas, and a bad hair dye reaction on Linsey before their first date, they finally got together, and there has been no looking back!

Of the two Sisters, one is always the watcher, one the dancer. Well, I am definitely the watcher as I missed out on both coordination and rhythm, whereas Linz is definitely the dancer. She has danced her way through life to her own rhythm.

The world of Linz has always been a place you want to be a part of…. Full of dreams, laughter, music, quirky ideas, and God…… it draws you in,… it surprises you, delights you, comforts you, and makes you feel special, and I feel lucky to have been there from the very beginning.

Linsey has been there through thick and thin, been my confidant and adviser, Loyal and protective; Neil, she will be all of these things to you and more! Today I am not losing a sister but gaining another brother. I would love to take this opportunity to welcome you to our family; the adventure begins here.

Could I ask you all to raise your glasses as I propose A toast to Linsey and Neil.

May your dreams be shared visions, your Christian walk side by side, hand in hand, and your love deepen every day of your lives.

To Linsey and Neil.”

Heartfelt Younger Sister Of The Bride Speech

We know that not all sisters have an intense bond, and many don’t grow up together. But love is love, and Genesee shares her undying love for Marin (her older sister) with a heartfelt speech that explains their distance, reconnection, and unconditional love that will last for eternity. Check out this lovely younger sister of the bride speech.

“I want to start by saying how, just last night, Marin whispered to me how worried she was that people wouldn’t love her wedding. Marin, let me reassure you on that one. Judging by the sea of smiles around me, you can put that fear neatly to rest.

Hello, everybody, and thank you for coming. I’m Genesee, and I’m Marin’s younger sister.

Marin and Hal are the cutest couple, aren’t they? It’s incredible to think that they didn’t know one another four years ago. They’re so in-tune with one another and so comfortable with sharing their truths.

I am thankful for having the opportunity to get to know Hal and welcome him as the brother I never had. He loves to sing as I do, and he has joined in on numerous karaoke nights when Marin would wave him out the door with her usual, “Go bother someone else with all that croaking.” With that, we’d head to our favorite karaoke bar and croak away.

Just last week, we were singing away and having a blast. I guarantee there will be many more to follow!

Reconnecting

Marin and I have an unusual family history. We weren’t all that close when we were growing up. It wasn’t until I was in college that we really got close. I had a pretty rough time of it at first—I can see by the smiles that some of you remember dealing with me when I was having my “rough time”—and one night, when I was feeling really gloomy, something made me send Marin a message, even though we hadn’t talked in months. She wrote back right away, and we ended up talking until late in the night.

That night long chat turned into weekly coffee meet-ups and coping with college got a lot easier after that. I just needed to remember I had an older sister I could count on.

And of course, I remember the coffee chat when Marin told me about this great guy she’d just met. You guys might know him; he’s standing over there now. Hi, Hal!

Love From All Corners

But let’s bring it all back to today. Marin, I see the way Hal looks at you. I see the way your little girl looks at you, who, by the way, is the cutest flower girl ever. All of that love makes me so proud to call you my sister. Some days I completely forget that we didn’t grow up together.

To Marin, Hal, and little Tala, I wish you the very best. Wherever the road takes you, you’ll be surrounded with love and laughter. Oh, and this girl right here, because I’m not going anywhere. I love you guys. Cheers to the bride and groom!”

How to Write a Maid of Honor Speech

Tips to knock your maid of honor speech out of the park.

You've been asked to play a huge role in your best friend's wedding—maid of honor! But, the job comes with a slew of important tasks , including giving the maid of honor speech. While this is a moment to celebrate your friendship, the idea of getting up in front of a crowd can be nerve-wracking if you're not used to giving speeches.

As staunch advocates of BFF love, we've taken it upon ourselves to create a go-to guide for penning the perfect speech to see your bestie off on their new life with their partner. With a few tips and tricks along with plenty of practice, your maid of honor speech will go off without a hitch.

With expert insight from professional speechwriter Katelyn Peterson—founder of vow- and toast-writing company Wedding Words —and examples of real-life speeches, we have all the details you need. Read on for helpful tips and guidelines to deliver an absolutely unforgettable maid of honor speech.

Maid of Honor Speech Template

While every maid of honor speech will be different, we've put together an outline to get you started on yours.

Start with the bride; end with the couple . Of everyone at the wedding, you have the best insight into how much your bestie's partner has changed them for the better. Your maid of honor speech needs to be about the friend you knew long before meeting their soulmate and then pivot to what role they have played in their life. Maybe your friend is even funnier now, or maybe you've simply never seen your BFF so happy. This is also a great way to incorporate their new spouse into the speech if you don't really know them that well; speak to the way that they complement each other or how your BFF's new spouse has made them a better person.

Pepper in anecdotes . Stories do a better job of getting your point across than blanket statements do. "Each anecdote you share should have an underlying theme that ties all the short stories together," says Peterson. "Reveal that theme near the end of your speech , and you’ll achieve a strong emotional impact."

End with a positive outlook . The nature of this speech is not so much about your relationship with your friend, but the bond the couple shares. Make sure all of the separate components of your toast draw a positive conclusion, ending in how happy the couple is together and your best wishes for their marriage .

Maid of Honor Speech Tips

Keep in mind these helpful tips from professional speechwriter Katelyn Peterson to ensure you nail your maid of honor toast .

Brainstorm . Kick-start the creative process by writing down any memories , emotions, or ideas that make you think of your BFF. "I recommend free-writing for 20 minutes," says Peterson. "When you’re done with this exercise, you should have some quality material that you can weave into the form of a speech." This allows you to create a blueprint of all the major points you want to make—more or less creating a roadmap for your ideas—and then fill it in with supporting information.

Ditch generic praise . "Use entertaining and engaging stories to show the bride’s personality ," advises Peterson. There's a big difference between simply saying, "She is such a great friend!" versus telling a story that illustrates just that.

Half the guests may not know your BFF all that well, so use this moment to paint a picture of how amazing they are. Bring their character to life with details only you could know.

Remember it isn't about you . While a lot of the anecdotes should be about your time with your friend, you should not be the focal point. After you briefly introduce yourself (remember: most of the people probably won't know who you are or your relation to the couple), you shouldn't be making any additional references to yourself. You're simply the vehicle to explain why the newlyweds are so fantastic.

Do not mention exes . No one wants to be reminded of past relationships , particularly in front of their family, friends, and new life partner. Keep the tone of your speech positive, and it will reflect positively on you also. You don't want to come across as though you're trying to roast your friend.

Keep it short . The longer your speech, the more opportunities you'll have for people to start losing attention. "Keep your speech under five minutes," suggests Peterson. "Anywhere between two to five minutes is great."

Pause . Be sure to pause for a few seconds after each joke to let the audience laugh. When you immediately start speaking right afterward, you won't give people a chance to laugh or even understand the next line. Keep in mind that starting the speech on a funny note can help you capture the attention of the audience for a minute or two, but it's the meaningful content that will keep them enthralled until the end. "Your goal should be to have guests laughing and wiping tears away by balancing humor with sincerity," says Peterson.

If you experience public-speaking jitters, try looking just above everyone’s head. This can minimize your anxiety while allowing guests to think you're looking right at them.

Don't use inside jokes . If the joke or situation is something other wedding guests would have to be there to understand, avoid using it. If people don't understand the context behind it, it will probably go over their heads. It's okay to poke a little bit of fun at your friend, but keep it light. Don't say anything that would be embarrassing or make them feel uncomfortable.

Practice . "The more you recite your speech out loud, the more comfortable you’ll become," notes Peterson. Practice your speech twice a day, starting at least a week beforehand, and record yourself a couple of times so you can hear your pacing and tone. Rehearse the speech in front of friends, too, in order to see if your jokes get a laugh, and try practicing in a mirror to nail your physical presence.

Answer These Questions to Get Started

Here are a few questions to ask yourself to start brainstorming ideas for your speech.

Maid of Honor Speech Examples to Make Your Own

"Good evening, everyone. I’m Cami, the maid of honor and the bride’s best friend. Over the past 15 years, I’ve witnessed Madison prioritize everyone else’s happiness, but today, we get to honor hers. With Madison being my most fun-loving friend, I knew she’d be down to join me on a two-week adventure traveling throughout Europe. We lived together, but nothing cements a friendship quite like sharing a full-size bed in dingy hostels from the Netherlands to Spain. Madison’s luggage kept breaking, and she went through four suitcases in 14 days! There we were, strolling down a busy street in Madrid and Madison’s clothes were falling out of her over-packed suitcase, painting the path behind us with her sundresses and socks. But she never let her rundown luggage ruin the trip. She just kept rolling with it. Literally. I can always depend on Madison to roll with any situation, to show up for the people that she loves, and to have a good time.

She has this belief that the more she can give you, embrace you, and love you—the better off she is.

But the truth is everyone in this room is better for knowing you, Madison. You love so deeply, selflessly, and unconditionally. And I know that Pete is the best partner for Madison because I’ve seen him mirror these traits for her. No matter what may come your way, your combined patience, resilience, and love will make you an unstoppable team. And most importantly, I know you two will continue to keep rolling with it . Cheers!" —Cami

"I’m Ashley and welcome! I was introduced to Sarah through a mutual friend to evaluate if she would be a fit as my future roommate. I showed up to that first dinner wearing a casual sundress and flats. Meanwhile, Sarah walked in with voluminous curls, smoky eyes , red lipstick, and a smile that showed me she deserved that Miss Florida title in ’04. I just thought, 'Who is this girl?' Over the next two hours, I learned that this girl was the coolest, funniest person and that I had to live with her. We moved in and it was truly an immediate fit from watching the same shows to downing bottles of the same wine. Despite our homebody nature, we did enjoy our Saturday nights running around the city. One night after several margaritas, Sarah and I found ourselves locked out of our house. So we came up with the best plan we could imagine: Let’s cannonball into our pool. There we were: Two tequila-loving girls cannonballing to see who could create the biggest splash. From that night on, whenever we went out, we’d ask ourselves one key question: 'Is it going to be a cannonball in the pool kind of night?'

Inspiring joyful moments is what Sarah does for everyone else in her life, and it makes me happy to know that her new husband will do exactly that for her.

And just like she’s always filled the gap in our friend group—we know that John has entered her life to level her out in the best of ways, too. Let’s raise a glass to Sarah and John! May your life together be full of cannonball-in-the-pool kind of nights." —Ashley

"Hi, my name is Makena and I’m the bride’s younger sister and maid of honor . As I look at Winnie and Miles today, I see two people in the most loving, trustworthy, and nurturing relationship I’ve ever witnessed. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to me that even on her wedding day, Winnie is teaching me about life and love. Because the truth is Winnie has been my lifelong teacher. She’s the one who taught me how to read and how to ride a bike, but my most memorable teaching moment was when I was 11 years old.  We had this mutual understanding—or so I thought—that we would not read each other’s journals. But I, of course, read hers and naively assumed she did not read mine. I learned the truth when I opened my journal one day to see an entire page filled with Winnie’s handwriting. There in the middle of my journal was a critique from my sister detailing out how I could improve my writing.

That’s one of the things I love and admire about Winnie: She inspires the people around her to be the best versions of themselves.

I know that if it weren’t for my sister, I would not be the person I am today. I’m inspired daily by the woman she is. Her confidence is unshakable, her excitability is contagious, and her determination is awe-inspiring. Winnie will finally get to experience what I’ve felt like my entire life with her. She’ll be cared for, unconditionally loved, and will learn every day with Miles as her lifelong teacher through love. Please raise a glass to Winnie and Miles! May you two never stop learning from each other as you continue to love each other." —Makena

First things first, don't over complicate it! Stay authentic to yourself and keep it simple by telling a story , sharing why you love the bride, and toasting to the newlyweds.

Keep it short and sweet! Having a two to five minute speech that is both sentimental and humorous is the best way to honor the couple in a way that is engaging and memorable .

Close out your speech with a simple, light-hearted joke and a toast to the newlyweds . This will create the perfect opportunity for a combined cheer and chuckle from the crowd .

My Maid of Honor Speech

A couple weekends ago, I stood beside my middle sister, Melanie, as she married her longtime boyfriend and now husband, Ben. Being the first of three daughters to get married, my sister’s wedding was a huge milestone for our family. Lots of planning went in to making it the most special day. For two years, my sister called me (nearly) every day to discuss one wedding detail or another; with every FaceTime call, I quickly learned that wedding planning is not an easy feat. In the end though, the whole thing went off without a hitch — perfectly emotional, celebratory, and a whole lot of fun. The morning after, our voices were strained from singing, our faces hurt from so many smiles, and our feet were sore from dancing the night away. What more could you ask for?

Being the Maid of Honor, tradition told me I had to prepare a toast for the bride and groom — something my sister KINDLY reminded me to be prepared for several times in the home stretch (which, come on Mel, why’d you ever doubt me?). I had been in a few other wedding parties before my sister’s wedding, but never as the Maid of Honor. This was new territory for me, uncharted waters in terms of what was expected. “Should I be funny?” I asked myself. “Or should I stick to sentimental?” I countered. I didn’t want to overthink it, but I knew it needed to be special.

The first time I read the final draft of my speech out loud to my mom, I teared up. Well, we both cried. No doubt us Brandl girls get our emotional side from our mom. But truthfully, no amount of practice makes something so important any less emotional or nerve-wracking. From the time the DJ handed me the microphone to the time I recited my speech to my sister and 150 other people, I was shaking with nerves. I hate being the center of attention in a large crowd. But I got through it!

In the end, I chose a mix of funny and sentimental for my speech. Anything too sappy, I knew I’d never make it through. Plus, our mom would have been an emotional wreck and I knew that if she cried, I’d be a big, melted bucket of tears by the end. I shared my Maid of Honor speech with love and dedication to my sister and best friend on July 10th, and now I’m sharing it with you too. Melanie, my sister, my friend, this one’s for you.

“ Good evening everyone. First and foremost, I wanted to extend a heartfelt congratulations to the newlyweds. Melanie & Ben, it’s been nothing short of an honor standing beside you today as one chapter of your love story comes to a close and the next begins. I mean it when I say I’m so happy for both of you. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your big day. Many of you know me, but to those of you who don’t, I’m Jennifer, Melanie’s older sister and Maid of Honor. In all honesty, I can talk just about anyone’s ears off, but give me a microphone in front of a large audience and even I get a little bit of stage freight. That being said I’ll do my best to make this short and sweet with one objective: to cry fewer tears than our mom. Someone check the rain gage! To Melanie, my sister, my friend. Growing up with you over the past two and a half decades has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Never in a million years did I ever imagine I’d get a little sister and a lifelong best friend in one roll of the dice, but I did, and for that I’m so grateful. I have so much love and respect for you; I hope you know that now and never forget it. ”

“ We have such differing personalities, but at the core we’re so much more alike than we’re willing to admit. We share a lot of the same stubbornness, passion, and genuine desire to shine a brighter light into this world. We’re both too nosy for our own good, but that’s okay by me. When we fight, we fight hard, but we always come back to each other because we know we couldn’t stand being mad at one another for more than what, an hour? We share little secrets and always say, “Don’t tell anyone yet”, but one or both of us always ends up blabbering to mom because let’s be real, Brandl’s can’t keep secrets. As you know better than most, there was never a dull moment in the Brandl household. 1 bathroom for five people meant there was often 1 person showering, 1 person on the toilet, and 1 person at the vanity at any given time. Privacy was a luxury none of us were afforded. Maybe that’s why we’re so close. ”

“ Growing up, we were pretty much inseparable. You always looked up to me as a role model and I tried to be the best one for you. There was, however, one small mishap a time or two. Like when I dared you to stick your tongue to the steel patio railing outside in the middle of winter, promising you it wouldn’t get stuck. You listened to me and stuck your whole tongue onto the railing and it got stuck so bad I thought we’d have to call 911 to get it off. When we finally got it pulled off, you cried so hard, ran upstairs, and stuck your tongue into a pillow the rest of the night; I felt so bad making you swear you wouldn’t tell dad. And then there was the time you took a candy bar from the Arpin concession stand without paying for it and I used it as blackmail to get you to do all sorts of stuff for me. When you wouldn’t listen to me, I’d look at you and say “I’ll tell mom about your stealing.” You were so scared to get in trouble and I rode that one out a litttttle longer than I should have. Sorry about that. ”

“ We’ve made some of the best memories together, memories that we still laugh and talk about today. As we’ve grown older, we’ve grown to be more inseparable than our younger selves ever were. And it makes my heart so happy to have such a friend in you. When I went off to college and moved halfway across the country, I know it was hard for both of us. No longer could we hangout every minute of every day. But we learned to fill our void with FaceTime calls (LOTS of FaceTime calls), always there giving each other advice, ranting about something or another, and plotting our next travel destination. ”

“ In all of our travels, I will always cherish our Florida sistercation road trip the most. After spending several days relaxing at Clearwater Beach and stopping at every WaWa gas station we passed, we traded the beach views for our first Disney experience. That morning, we left Tampa to drive to Disney (well, I drove, you slept all the way to the Magic Kingdom gates), spent an entire day at the park, then drove to West Palm Beach after Disney’s late night fireworks show. The drive from Orlando to West Palm Beach was 2 hours and we both agreed to each take a 1 hour driving shift. You offered to go first so I could take a nap before I drove the 2AM shift. Less than 15 minutes later we were doing a Chinese fire drill off some dark highway because I woke up to find you hovering over the steering wheel holding your eyes open as hard as you could. You got in the passenger seat and 5 minutes later, you were snoring. All the way to our hotel. You’re not a very good copilot. ”

“ While I’m sad I can’t always be around all the time, I’m so happy you and Ben found sustaining happiness with each other. Ben, you’ve been around for so long I don’t even remember the first time I met you as Melanie’s official boyfriend. I just remember teasing her once I found out, singing “Mel and Ben sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g”. We welcomed you to the Brandlfam back then, and couldn’t be more excited that you’re still here with us today. Welcome to the family! It’s been so fulfilling to see the two of you grow together over the years. Ben, I’m so happy knowing my best friend has found the truest kind of love and confidant in you and I couldn’t be more excited to watch the two of you blossom as husband and wife. As you begin your new journey together, I wish you both the most fun filled life, a life where you grow to love each other more every day, never stop exploring, and always find new, exciting ways to keep the spark ignited. May you always remember to compromise (and by compromise, I mean do exactly what Melanie wants, when she wants, and how she wants), apologize, laugh it off, and prioritize the needs of one another. You’ve made it this far, there’s no doubt you were meant to be together. I can’t wait to celebrate with you tonight and all the years to come. So cheers to you, Melanie & Ben, and cheers to love, happiness, and adventures near and far. My only request is that you promise to save a little adventure in life for me. Melanie, I hear you’ve never been to Costa Rica and I see a sistercation in our future. I mean, someone’s got to show you around all the beautiful places I got to see when mom let ME go all those years ago. Lots of love to both. Cheers! ”

As always, thanks for reading. See you next time!
