You can now get a PhD in creativity
Universities don’t like change. But as the breakneck pace of technology speeds up the modern economy, these ancient institutions are starting to break the rules .
To adapt to the needs of future workers, some colleges are moving their courses online ; others are doubling down on artificial intelligence . The latest school to offer a nontraditional approach to higher education is the University of the Arts, a visual and performing arts school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which has just set up a new PhD program not in an specific discipline—but in the overarching idea of creativity.
Under the new creativity PhD , which debuted last month, students will participate in cross-disciplinary workshops and produce unique, independent dissertations, advised by professionals brought in from outside the university. The PhD begins with an immersive two-week “creative bootcamp,” meant to throw the students—who ideally will be mid-career professionals already successful in one industry—out of their comfort zone entirely.
By corralling people of different fields together under one program, the school hopes to break with academia’s centuries-old tradition of isolating disciplines and inspire students to learn the act of creativity itself. Collaboration and innovation are the focus, rather than advancement in a particular subject.
The whole venture resembles a Silicon Valley startup accelerator more than a degree program—which is partly the intent. As the school’s president David Yager explains it to Quartz: “I think about it as re-engineering. If we’re successful, some of these people will be driving and focusing on industries we’re not even talking about right now. They’ll have tools to think differently.”
Jonathan Fineberg, the director of the PhD program and a 40-year veteran of academia, says he has never felt comfortable with the way most degree programs force students to master all the literature that came before them in order to start on their own work. “It takes some people 10 years to break free of the hierarchies they’ve been taught,” he says. “We want somebody without the skills on the agenda to figure it out in a non-methodical way.”
Fineberg and Yager point out that a growing number of companies these days employ a “chief creative officer” or “chief brain,” whose role involves tackling problems across industries. Many of those people come from nontraditional, nonacademic backgrounds; in the duo’s view, however, it is also possible to be trained directly for those roles. At $48,800 a year, the new PhD is not cheap, but the tuition cost rivals that of other advanced degrees.
The program joins a small but budding list of creativity-themed offerings from universities. Buffalo State College, which has offered courses in creativity in 1967, is the oldest US university to consider as an academic discipline. The point, as professor Roger Firestien explained it to the New York Times (paywall) in 2014, is to “make creativity happen instead of waiting for it to bubble up. A muse doesn’t have to hit you.” As American employees splinter from their companies and move toward independent work , adopting a creative mindset in any case cannot hurt.

How to Survive Your PhD

About this course
You need to be smart to begin a PhD - but you need to be resilient to finish one. Between one-quarter and one-third of all research students never finish their degree. The PhD is an emotional journey as much as it is an intellectual one.
What kinds of emotions does the research degree process provoke? What strategies can help students deal with the emotional highs and lows? How can academic advisors, family and friends help research students cope with these stresses - and celebrate the successes?
This course is primarily designed for masters, PhD, and research students and the academics who are tasked with helping them, but you may also be a family member or friend of a PhD student who is seeking to better understand what your loved one is going through.
By directly addressing the emotional issues, and by helping us see the connections between emotional resilience and success, this course aims to help us all create a more supportive academic environment, where students can do their best research work.

- Discuss and create strategies and approaches to help research students cope with the emotional challenges of research study.
- Help academics and prospective academics become more effective research supervisors.
Week one: Setting the scene Prior research on research student success and failure shows that there are a range of common factors at play. We examine these factors and start to look at the causes. Week Two: A quick history of the doctorate To better understand how and research degree study can be so difficult we will take a brief tour back to the late middle ages and the birth of the university - as a place and an idea. Week Three: Confidence We take a look at confidence, in particular why some students have very little. We’ll explore the imposter syndrome and how we might counter it and then have a look at the risks of over confidence. Week Four: Frustration This week we look at frustration. Research can be very frustrating, but writing is perhaps the site of most of the frustration that students feel. We explore the nature of this frustration and how supervisors can make it better - or worse. Week Five: Loneliness Loneliness and isolation seems to be a common problem for research students - but how does it happen? We look at the difference between social isolation and intellectual isolation. We tackle the difficult problem of how much help a supervisor should really give a student. Week Six: Fear Research students are high achievers who often have an intense fear of failure. We look at two fears in particular - fear of writing and fear of speaking in public. Week Seven: Curiosity Good researchers are curious creatures! Curiosity is crucial to research, but what happens when curiosity gets out of control? This week we focus on the literature review as a site where curiosity can get out of control. Week Eight: Confusion Confusion is an inevitable part of the research degree process - but do research students get confused about the same sorts of things? Week Nine: Boredom A research degree usually involves a big project that takes place over an extended period of time. It’s inevitable that some students will get bored. But boredom is much more interesting than you might think! Week Ten: Love Do researchers always love their work? What about love for your supervisor - is that appropriate? If you truly love your discipline, how should you behave as a researcher? This week we look at Love - and it’s complicated.

What our students say

The university offers a wealth of resources and support to help students reach their academic goals.
Expertise and guidance
Since enrolling as a sociolinguistics PhD student at Goldsmiths, my academic and social experiences have been nothing short of exceptional. Previously I had the privilege of studying MA Sociocultural Linguistics , with a particular focus on the 'Discourse and Identity in Spoken Interaction' module. This has equipped me with a strong foundation to apply my sociolinguistic and discourse knowledge to my own research. I am incredibly grateful for my supervisor, Dr Pia Pichler , whose unwavering patience, expertise, and guidance have been instrumental in helping me achieve my goals.
Amazing resources
The university offers a wealth of resources and support to help students reach their academic goals. These include services such as academic coaching, academic writing advice, and digital literacy support from Subject Librarians. Based on my experience, I highly recommend that future students take full advantage of these resources in order to maximise their potential and achieve their academic aspirations. With the guidance of these resources, students can build the necessary skills to excel in their studies and receive the support needed to succeed at Goldsmiths. So, my suggestion to future students would be to make the most of these amazing resources and unlock their full potential during their time at Goldsmiths.
Award recognition
I was the runner-up for the Judith Baxter Award, which recognises the work of one promising new researcher in language, gender and sexuality per year. The review panel was extremely impressed by the scope and depth of my fieldwork, my attention to an under-researched area, and my challenge to the global south's perspective on intersectionality. The committee felt that my work has the potential to make a significant contribution to the field of language, gender and sexuality.
A rich tapestry of diverse cultures
South East London is a vibrant and dynamic place that offers a rich tapestry of diverse cultures to explore. From Korean and Vietnamese to Lebanese and Chinese, there is an abundance of wonderful and unique food to indulge in. In addition to the classic British pubs that the area is known for, I encourage you to take your taste buds on an adventure and experience the wide variety of flavours and cuisines available in this exciting part of the city.
Entry requirements

Course summary
The inter-relationship between theory, scholarship and the creative process is a key to the Goldsmiths MPhil/PhD in Creative Writing.
Programme content
You'll be expected to combine your own creative writing – whether poetry, fiction or life writing – with research into the genre or area of literature in which you are working, to gain insight into its history and development, and to engage with relevant contemporary debates.
This might be genre in the more traditional sense, for example satire, fictional autobiography, verse drama, or particular traditions to which you feel your work relates, for example projective verse, postmodernist fiction, or Caribbean poetics.
This element of the PhD – the critical commentary – will constitute around 30% of the final work; the major part – 70% – will be a creative work of publishable standard: a novel, memoir, book of poems or collection of stories, for example.
Assessment is by thesis and viva voce.
North American applicants especially should note that the British system does not include preparatory taught classes or examinations as part of the MPhil/PhD programme, except for an initial course in research methods.

- the ability to assimilate and evaluate competing arguments
