Silly Writing Prompts that Your 2nd Grader Will Love (Free PDF!)
Ever heard of a story prompt like this?
- What if a pig and his friends traveled to the moon?
One student, Audrey Willey, a 2nd-grade homeschooler at the time, created her own adorable story based on a simple “what if” scenario.
Yes, even though we've listed our favorite prompts below, you can easily make your own. It doesn't have to be complicated.
You really just need "a problem to solve" or a "big goal" for the characters to achieve. Of course, plopping their heroes in a fun setting will help to capture your 2nd graders imagination and entice them to write.
Oh, and here's a tip we like share.
“Make us Worry!” and “Make us Care! ”
Who or what will block the Hero's way?
How might we care deeply for the hero?
If your 2nd grader doesn't want to dive into those questions, that's fine.
As long as their hero makes progress towards their goal, readers will be engaged and enjoy the ride!
Again, below are some of our favorite 2nd grade writing prompts.
But first, here’s Audrey’s hilarious and wonderfully playful tale. Enjoy.

PEEG STORY
By Audrey Willey
One sunny, hot July day, in the neighborhood swimming pool, Peeg, Panda, Airplane and Rabbit were playing catch the ball. Then Peeg wanted to go play in the mud puddle. They went to play in the mud and played until midnight.
Then Peeg saw the round, white moon.
"Boy, I would like to visit the moon," he said.
"We could," said Plane. "Hop on me!
So they all hopped on Plane.
"One, two, three, take off!" he shouted.
They all flew up. Airplane was so excited he went super duper fast.
Soon, they were close to the moon. But, Peeg, Panda, and Rabbit all fell off Plane.
"My, how light you are!" Airplane said. "Did you eat air?" Peeg, Panda, and Rabbit were drifting in space. Peeg, Panda, and Rabbit found a broken spaceship, but it could not move. They fixed the spaceship together using all the tools in the spaceship.
He was almost there at the moon. But, Plane fell into a black hole. Peeg, Rabbit, and Panda heard the news.
They all thought of ways to save Plane. First, they tried to get Plane out with a rope. Peeg, Rabbit and Panda threw the rope as hard as they could. But it did not work because Plane had no arms.
"I can't grab it!" said Plane.
Then they tried a ladder. They put a huge ladder into the black hole, but Plane could not climb because he had no legs.
Finally, they tried a fishing pole. And that did work!
The hook hooked onto the propeller. And the propeller wound up the string. Peeg, Rabbit and Panda pulled Plane up.
"Hello," said Plane. "Thank you for pulling me up! Let's go have some pixie sticks."
So, they went back to Earth all safe and sound on the spaceship.
Wild prompts inspire wild adventures! We love this beautiful tribute to friendship and imagination, and we can tell Audrey loved telling it.
We hope this story will encourage your child to let out their silly belly and tell us a heartwarming tale just like Audrey!
And now, enjoy these strange and wonderful 2nd grade writing prompts collected from our students. Feel free to send us your own and we’ll include it here! In the meantime, we look forward to reading your young writer's story when we announce a new Story Contest !
Have fun!

I love this webstite
Awwhhh… I’m so glad to hear that! 😀
Are you kidding me? You misspelled write! That is horrible considering what kind of website this is.
Dear Brooke,
All writers make mistakes, and very often many of them. That’s why we have editors!
But seriously, mistakes are a part of writing, and very respectfully I disagree that they are, as you say, “horrible”. They simply are what they are.
Having said that, if you would like to give further details as to where exactly this error is on the page I would be more than happy to fix it!
Thanks much for visiting.
Kindly, Jill Author of Journal Buddies
Love this! Thanks! Going to use some of these to help prompt my reluctant writer to come out of his shell some 🙂
I hope these prompts will help unleash the joy of creative expression in your little guy! 😀
Ever so kindly, Jill Author and Creator of Journal Buddies

Inspiring Writing Prompts
These prompts can inspire 2nd graders to write about topics they are interested in and also help them write about things they have experienced and read. Have a look:
- The world is full of different kinds of people. Some are kind, some are mean, and some are just weird. But the best part about being a kid is that you can do whatever you want. You can be whatever kind of person you want, even if that means being weird! What kind of person do you want to be when you grow up?
- If someone were to ask me what my favorite food is, I would say pizza. The smell in the oven makes me hungry all day long. We have a pizza place near our house that makes the best pizza I’ve ever had. It’s not because they have the best ingredients or anything—it’s just because their dough is so good that it doesn’t need anything else! What’s your favorite food?
- When visiting my grandma at her house, she made us some homemade chocolate chip cookies for dessert. They tasted so good that we ate every single one! And then my grandma told us to clean up our mess before dinner started cooking downstairs—which would take about an hour and fifteen minutes or so because she had lots of other things to do first (like getting ready for work). Can you relate to this?
- The snowman is lonely. What do you think would make him feel better?
- A group of kids is playing football, but one kid is missing. Where does he go?
- My favorite part of the day is when I go to school; it’s where I go every day and learn lots of new things. I like going to school because we have lots of fun things to do and know, and we can make friends with other kids. What’s your favorite part of the day?

59+ 2nd Grade Writing Prompts (+ Free Worksheets)
Keep on reading for a list of fun, educational and easy 2nd-grade writing prompts designed to interest any youngster.
When it comes to the 2nd grade, we all know that learning new words, spelling and legible handwriting is all-important. Bur rather than, asking students to just write their own name beautifully or to learn a list of words – could there be a more fun way of improving these skills? And the answer is yes. Through carefully thought-out writing prompts designed to peak your student’s interests, you could slowly, but surely increase your students interest in writing altogether.
Writing Struggles
Writing prompts for the second-grade students need to be detailed, and clearly state what is required. Something as simple as ‘write a short story about a dragon who loves to eat doughnuts’ – won’t cut it for most 2nd graders. You need to break this writing task down. A better prompt to give your students is, ‘write the opening sentence to a story about a dragon who loves to eat doughnuts.’ Here you are expected the child to only write down one sentence, which is a much more manageable task compared to asking the child to write a whole story.
At such a young age, developing a child’s creativity and imagination is key. Inside their little heads, they can tell great stories of fire-breathing dragons, superheroes and monsters. But putting it down on paper can be difficult for more children. Asking questions, and giving as many prompts as possible could really help the child write down their ideas, thoughts and feelings. At this point, you can worry less about sentence structure, punctuation and grammar, and encourage your child to be free with their writing!

Why is it important for kids to write?
Getting second graders to write is not always easy, but encouraging them is essential.
Writing is a fantastic way for young children to get to know themselves better, practice communication skills, and expand their imagination.
According to Gail E. Tompkins, Professor Emerita at California State University, children can benefit in many ways by writing stories.
In her research published in the journal Language Arts, Tompkins explains that children benefit from creative writing in the following ways:
- They get entertained
- Writing fosters artistic expression
- Children get to ‘explore the functions and values of writing’
- Writing stimulates the imagination
- Writing clarifies thinking
- Writing helps children discover and explore their identity
- Practice makes perfect – writing practices improve children’s reading and writing skills
It’s not new information that writing helps children grow and develop.
A child may use any prompts in this article and write a story that others may not, which is a testament to children’s inherent creativity and sense of play.
The more you encourage your second grader to write and the more interest and support you show in their creative pursuits, the healthier and happier the child will likely be as they grow up.
Hopefully, you’ve found at least a few writing prompts in this article to help your second grader get their creative juices flowing.
If you’re a teacher in a classroom, it may help to allow students to read their completed stories aloud to the class. Of course, some students won’t want to do that, but the ones that do will appreciate the opportunity.
If you’re a parent and have a second-grader at home, understand that exploring creative story writing is a fantastic way to support your child’s growth and development.
Exploring creativity in the home takes the pressure off kids to write something ‘good’ and helps them feel safe enough to explore their creative side truly.

5 Imaginative Writing Prompts for 2nd Grade
by Studentreasures | Dec. 14, 2017 | Writing Prompts

With a little direction and motivation, their imaginations become powerful tools for learning and skill-building—and nowhere is this truer than in the realm of creative writing. Use these writing prompts to give your 2nd graders a nudge in the right direction.
Prompt #1: “If you could be someone else’s imaginary friend, whose would you be?”

And of course, the biggest question of all: what would life be like as an imaginary friend, someone who could only be seen by the person who imagined them in the first place? Or, can other people imagine them, too? Can imaginary friends be shared?

PROJECT IDEA
Ask them to draw themselves as imaginary friends. Would they look like themselves, but have wings or blue hair? Would they be animals or mythical creatures? Pair their portraits with their journal entries and publish their work as a fun classbook .
Prompt #2: “If you could visit any planet, which one would you pick?”

Ask your students to draw the landscape of their chosen planet. The more detailed their drawings, the better! Then ask them to write a caption for their picture describing what it was like to finally set foot on another planet. Collect their drawings, captions and writing assignments and publish them in a classbook that’s out of this world!
Are you Enjoying this Content?
Prompt #3: “imagine you have $1 million to give away to others. who will you give money to”.

To accompany their responses, ask your students to illustrate what they think each person or organization they give to will do with the money. Maybe Mom would buy a new car, or maybe Uncle Edward would like to go back to school. Publish their illustrations and writing in a lovely classbook that’s all about being generous!
Prompt #4: “What is something you are scared of? What would make it less scary?”

Ask your students to draw the silly versions of their fears. Encourage them to get as ridiculously creative with it as they can! Then ask them to write an additional paragraph or so describing how they feel about it now. Is it still just as scary—or do they maybe feel a little bit better, now that they’ve found a way to laugh at it? Gather all of their writing and artwork together and publish it in a classbook they can look back on anytime they need a little extra courage—or even just a good laugh!
Prompt #5: “What would happen if you were suddenly transported into their favorite fairytale?”

Ask your students to write their responses in narrative format, as if they are writing a new version of the fairytale they’ve chosen. Then ask them to draw an illustration to accompany their retelling of the story. Finally, match up their illustrations with their fairytales to create and publish a beautiful collaborative classbook in the style of the Brothers Grimm!
Inspiring Imaginative Writing
Writing helps your kids get their ideas out of their heads and into the world, showing them how even the craziest notions can be fuel for making something wonderful. And, by publishing those ideas, you can boost their confidence by helping them see just how powerful their imaginations really are—and what sort of amazing things they can accomplish with that power.

Reading 101: A Guide for Parents
Writing activities for your second grader.

Writing allows children to express their thoughts, creativity, and uniqueness. It is a fundamental way in which children learn to think critically, organize and communicate ideas, and make thinking visible and permanent. And learning to write well helps children to be better readers!

Writing with purpose, style, and structure
Second graders are learning how to write a variety of types of compositions, including stories, reports, and letters. They write about a range of topics with the audience in mind.
Second graders are polishing a wide range of basic writing skills, including writing legibly, using capitalization and punctuation correctly (most of the time!), and moving from invented spelling to more accurate spelling.
For most, handwriting becomes automatic, so they can concentrate more on the content of their writing rather than on the mechanics.
Second graders can organize their writing to include a beginning, middle, and end. They can write a simple essay with a title and introductory sentence, provide examples and details that support their main concept, and write a concluding sentence.
They are learning how to revise own writing and offer meaningful feedback to peers about their writing.
Be a writing role model
Make sure your child sees you writing. She will learn about writing by watching you write. Talk with her about your writing so that she begins to understand why writing is important and the many ways it can be used.
Does spelling count?
With second graders, you’ll see less invented spelling and more correct spelling (especially words from a word wall or vocabulary list). A good teacher will be able to tell the difference between the misspellings that indicate normal literacy development and those that suggest a possible learning disability. If you have questions, talk to your child's teacher or reading specialist.
Struggling with handwriting?
Handwriting involves more than just making letters on a page — it requires strong fine motor and visual-motor skills. Here are six multisensory techniques to try if your child is struggling with writing.
3 writing tips for kids who don’t like to write

Try these writing ideas at home
Write for a reason.
Help your child see that we write for a specific purpose and audience. Here are some writing prompts to try:
- Have your child write instructions for taking care of the family pet. These will be useful as you plan your summer vacations!
- Make a shopping list before going to the grocery store.
- Write an online review of a book or an item you recently purchased or a recipe you tried.
- Talk about the presidential election and write a description of the kind of president you want.
- Find a picture in the newspaper and write an article to accompany it.
- Have your child start keeping a personal diary, a household guestbook, or a baby book for a younger sibling.
Make a journal jar
A journal doesn’t have to be a diary. It can also be a book where your child writes about ideas or answers questions, like “If you could do anything next summer, what would you choose?” A journal jar is a place to keep all those ideas and questions. Wash and decorate a wide-mouthed jar, like one that used to contain peanut butter. Then, write or print out journal prompts on slips of paper. Ask your child to pull out one prompt each day and write about it in her journal.
Play “tell me how”
In this activity your child pretends she’s writing to a space alien who doesn’t know anything about our culture. This alien does everything exactly as it’s said or written. Your child’s job is to choose an everyday task, like brushing her teeth or making a sandwich. Then, she needs to write step-by-step directions about how to do the task for the alien. When she’s done, you get to be the alien and try to follow the steps exactly as she wrote them. She may be surprised at what she left out!
Play a writing game
This turn-taking writing game is based on a classic kids’ book by Remy Charlip called Fortunately . In it, something lucky happens and then something unlucky happens. Each event is introduced by either the word “fortunately” or the word “unfortunately.” To play, take a piece of paper and write a sentence beginning with “Fortunately,” such as “Fortunately it was a sunny day. I wanted to play outside.” Pass the paper to the next player, who will add an “unfortunately” sentence, such as “Unfortunately, I had to clean my room.” Keep going until the story is too silly to continue.
Family letters
Help your child write letters to relatives and friends. These may include thank you notes or just a special note to say hello. Be sure to send your child a letter or card once in awhile too so that she is reminded of how special it is to get a letter in the mail. And consider finding a pen pal for your child.
Family stories
Ask your child to interview a family member about his or her life. Encourage your child to write a short biography, and include a photo or drawing, and a meaningful quote from the relative. Your child may want to share it with family members.
Reader's theater
Encourage your child to read her stories out loud. Listen carefully with patience, and give positive feedback about her ideas and her writing!
Turn your child's writing into books. Paste her drawings and writings on pieces of construction paper. For each book, make a cover out of heavier paper or cardboard, and add special art, a title, and her name as author. Punch holes in the pages and cover, and bind the book together with yarn or ribbon.
Field notes
Encourage your child to take notes on trips or outings, and to describe what she saw, using all of her senses. This could include a description of a walk outside, a ride in a car or a bus, or other events that lend themselves to note taking.
Young reporter
Encourage your child to take notes on trips or outings, and to describe what she saw. This could include a description of nature walks, a boat ride, a car trip, or other events that lend themselves to note-taking.
Writing to remember
If your child likes a particular song, suggest that she learn the words by writing them down. Also encourage copying favorite poems or quotations from books and plays.
Play a game with pictures
Photos and images are great story sparkers. Do a web search and find a few interesting images. Or cut out pictures from magazines. The pictures can be realistic, such as a photo of students on a playground. Or they can be fantastical images, such as a superhero flying in space. Glue a couple images into a notebook. Then ask your child to write about one of them. You can prompt her, asking her to include what she sees, what the people are thinking, what will happen next—or just let her imagination run free.
Make an “I can” book
As your child learns to write, she’ll also be learning other new skills. Making an “I Can” book will let her practice writing skills and keep track of her other accomplishments. Staple together a bunch of blank sheets of paper to make a book. As your child reaches a new milestone, such as learning to tie her shoes or hit a baseball, she can draw a picture on a new page of the book. Younger kids can then write, “I can tie my shoes.” Older kids can write a few sentences about what they’ve accomplished.
Create a family scrapbook
A family scrapbook is a great way to save memories and jump-start your child’s writing. Use an inexpensive photo album to keep souvenirs of things you do together. This can include photos, ticket stubs, and found objects, like pretty leaves. Your child can begin by writing the date and a line about where you were and what you did. Then, you can work together to write a more detailed summary. Don’t forget to include funny or even annoying moments!
