How to Start a Reading Journal
That concludes the list of the best reading journals and book logs. If you have always wanted to start a reading journal but are nervous, here are some handy tips and tricks:
- Step One : Look at a few different types of journals to find a layout (or lack thereof) that you think will work for you.
- Step Two : Go through and figure out where everything in your notebook is. If you are designing your own, make sure to leave a lot of space for redesign if you change your mind along the way.
- Step Three : Set a reminder to update the journal. If you want to track how much you read a day, set an alert on your phone to update. Find a way to remind yourself to actually use your journal when you finish a book.
- Step Four : If you need inspiration for how to use/organize your reading journal, feel free to steal or borrow from others. There are tons of resources on YouTube, Pinterest, and blogs. Go find what works for you!
- Step Five : Don’t let yourself get discouraged. Sometimes you’ll forget to record, or make a mistake in your numbering/index. Maybe the page you designed doesn’t look as good as you hoped. Don’t let yourself get discouraged. Reading journals are there to help and encourage you , not anybody else. Practice makes perfect, so even if you don’t get it the first time, there are always more books and more journals.

WAR DIARY, by Yevgenia Belorusets
Robert Stone called the Vietnam War “a mistake 10,000 miles long.” In Ukraine, the front lines of the unwanted war with Russia extend about 600 miles . Surely that distance seems vastly longer to Russian troops stymied there. It must also seem longer to Ukraine’s citizens, for whom the war is immoral, illegal, stupid, concussive and terrifying.
When Vladimir Putin’s “special military operation” against Ukraine began a little more than a year ago, on Feb. 24, 2022, the artist and writer Yevgenia Belorusets began keeping a public diary. It ran in the German newspaper Der Spiegel and was released each day online by the avant-garde publisher Isolarii in connection with Artforum. Her diaries were adapted for an episode of the weekly public radio show “ This American Life .”
All this sets one up, perhaps, to expect more than this modest wafer of a book can deliver. But “War Diary” is among the first books to come out of this conflict, and it has plenty to say to a world audience.
The entries capture the first few weeks. Belorusets was in Kyiv, her hometown, at a distance from most of the fighting. Her elderly parents lived a five-minute walk away. The terror mostly came in over news broadcasts, and the messaging app Telegram . There were rumbles in the distance.
The State of the War
- Bakhmut: After months of epic struggle, the fight over the Ukrainian city had seemed to be reaching a climax, with Russian forces close to encircling the city . Then Ukrainian assault brigades went on the attack .
- Action in the Skies: Against the odds, Ukraine’s helicopter brigades are using aging vehicles to fight a better equipped adversary.
- Arming the World: As traditional weapons suppliers like the United States face wartime production shortages, South Korea has stepped in to fill the gap by arming Ukraine’s allies — but not Ukraine itself, to try to avoid provoking Russia.
Americans who lived through the Great Depression tended to describe a hollowing out of cities, a clearing of roads. That’s what happens in wartime too. “When I left my apartment today, I saw an empty street,” Belorusets writes. “No cars, no pedestrians. At such moments Kyiv seems like a city that has yet to be inhabited — a city without a present, with only a past and a future.”
Belorusets carries a camera, which makes her suspect to both sides. Armed men leap out of cars and ambush her; citizens report her, fearing she is spying for Russia. She is dragged to checkpoints. A friend tells her, “A sniper can catch the glint from your lens and aim to shoot.”
She’s careful about what she photographs. No resistance activities. No weaponry. A TikTok video apparently revealed the location of Ukrainian tanks, and the result was a fearsome shelling.
The big emotional takeaway from “War Diary” is a sense of abandonment. Belorusets can’t believe that the world is watching these atrocities, right out on Ukraine’s streets, and not stepping in more forcefully. Russia’s troops, to her, seem more like terrorists than soldiers.
Humanizing details pile up. She notices that one Ukrainian soldier is a former barista, known for the swans he would paint in milk foam. She quotes a message from her electric company urging residents to pay up: “Many Kyiv utility workers joined the Ukrainian army and are now fighting for our freedom. But it is still important to settle the bill.” She talks about the psychological importance of cleaning your apartment, even if you live mostly in the dark, with taped windows. An air-raid siren sounds to her like elephant language. She writes a good deal about pets that are left behind.
Belorusets also captures the mannerly, unflappable side of Kyiv. She writes about its wide avenues, its museums and botanical gardens and sculpture parks, its old houses and stately rivers and private zoos. She offers glimpses of the city’s intellectual life. Her father is a translator of German poetry into Russian. Nearly everyone she knows is an artist of some sort.
This book’s self-consciousness, as an art project, saps some of its immediacy. Belorusets’s prose, in this translation by Greg Nissan, lacks depth and grain. (She divides her time between Kyiv and Berlin, and this translation is from the German.) We don’t feel we come to know her very well. Few if any of her photographs, printed here in black and white, capture what Cartier-Bresson called decisive moments. For a book where tears are somewhat scarce, the author is poorly served by the neo-Gothic typeface on the cover, which makes the title appear to say “Waa Diary.”
It’s interesting to witness the way Belorusets thinks about the enemy. She despises what’s happening to her country, and she deplores some Russian soldiers who are drunks and louts. But she’s aware that so many of them have been lied to about what they’re doing in Ukraine. She considers compassion and its limits.
While the author remains in Kyiv, the news from nearby is an awful drumbeat. She notes the reports of mass graves, ordnance dropped on apartment buildings, murders of fleeing families, corpses seen by the side of the road. It all seems to be happening in a dream.
She relates her best hopes and worst fears. One of the few upsides to the terror is that it gives the city’s residents a shared purpose; it yokes them together. Often it’s all too much. As she waits and worries, you sense her heart just idling out there, like a car parked in an underpass during a storm.

Watchman at the Gates
A soldier’s journey from berlin to bosnia, george joulwan with david chanoff.
University Press of Kentucky, Lexington, 2021, 296 pages
Book Review published on: February 10, 2023
When was the last time you read an autobiography that grabbed you like an adventure novel and you just couldn’t put it down? George Joulwan and David Chanoff’s book, Watchman at the Gates: A Soldier’s Journey from Berlin to Bosnia , might serve those criteria. Few people in history have been fortunate enough to be in just the right place at just the right time to not only observe history unfold but also to influence the inner workings at the highest levels of government throughout their lives. Gen. George Joulwan was indeed such a fortunate person, but his experiences were not just the result of luck; he consistently made the most of the opportunities as he rose to the highest levels of command. That is perhaps half of the story he tells. He sets the stage by describing his family roots and upbringing, then chronicles the steps of a truly remarkable military career, from Beast Week at West Point in 1957 to serving as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACUER) and Commander in Chief, U.S. European Command (CINCUSAREUR), retiring in 1997. In between those two dates, of course, he witnessed the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, the Vietnam War, Grenada, Panama, the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and collapse of the Soviet Union, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, narco wars in Central and South America, the Balkans genocide and war, and the Rwandan genocide. He provides an “I was there” narrative of those events as he saw them, as one would expect. What one might not expect is his discussion of how to get the most out of an experience and out of a mentor; this discussion is threaded throughout the book. His list of mentors includes William Dupuy (3rd Infantry Division battle group commander in Germany when Joulwan was a lieutenant and division commander when Joulwan was a company commander in Vietnam), Robert Arter (Joulwan was his S-3 in Vietnam), and Alexander Haig (his battalion commander). His war college classmates included Gordon Sullivan, Binford Peay, David Maddox, Gary Luck, and John Shalikashvili. It takes talent to succeed, but what one does with talent and how one incorporates lessons learned along the way is what separates talent from greatness. John Vessey made Joulwan his XO when he became chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, apparently based on Joulwan’s reputation. Alexander Haig pulled him in when Haig became the Army’s vice chief of staff, then White House chief of staff. This placed a relatively young Joulwan inside the White House during the Watergate scandal as the Nixon administration unraveled. George Joulwan’s autobiography is not an insider tell-all, but he pulls few punches. He tells it like he sees it, right up through his experience as U.S. Southern Command commander and SACEUR/CINCUSAREUR (during the Balkan Wars and the Rwandan genocide intervention). The other half of the story? Joulwan does a masterful job of weaving in coaching advice about how to become an exceptional staff officer—how to adapt to a commander’s information needs for decision making and leadership style. That was unexpected, but in and of itself worth the time and effort to read the entire book; it is priceless advice. Don’t pass this one by.

19 Notebooks That Will Motivate You to Journal in the New Year
By Malia Griggs
In my apartment, I keep almost every journal I’ve ever written, from first grade on. I’m not an obsessive journaler ; actually, I’m consistently inconsistent about the frequency with which I write. But I’ve always maintained a notebook in some way, especially as I’ve grown older, and in 2019 I finally committed to a serious journaling practice . It is largely this reflective writing that kept me somewhat grounded amid the chaos that was 2020—and will hopefully continue to do so in 2021. I highly encourage you to consider starting a journaling practice this new year too, however big or small, as a reminder that each day was a whole, entire day that you lived, breathed, felt, grew, grieved, laughed, and loved, often in great emotional waves.
Of course, I totally understand that journaling can seem time-consuming, overwhelming, or like one of those things you always mean to do but never get to, like therapy or meditation. I felt that way for a long time too, because I hadn’t figured out the kind of journaler I was. Looking at my notebooks from my teens and 20s, there’s a progression from lined pink diaries that I used sporadically to small black unlined Moleskines, to even tinier, expensive, delicately papered ledgers that I ultimately never wrote in, since everything I wanted to write seemed too mundane (“Went to Trader Joe’s. Bought mochi. Went home”) or childish (“Does everyone hate me?!”) for its fancy pages.
At 28, after a diagnosis of stress-induced epilepsy , I experimented with different types of journals as a way of managing my anxiety and also to help improve my memory, which has grown spotty with the anti-epileptic medications I take (and with age). At 30, I landed on my magic combo: I now keep two journals.
The first is a page-a-day Moleskine planner in which I quickly note everything that transpired on that date, including the “boring” stuff. I also note my mood (on a fluctuating, subjective scale of 1 to 10 for anxiety), things I’m grateful for (a rare night of good sleep, my cat’s purr, a memorable meal, a new dress), and the weather.
My second journal is a larger, 9" x 12" Strathmore “visual journal.” It’s unlined, with thick paper that’s substantial enough that my markers and inks don’t bleed. In these pages I let myself really breathe. I doodle, paint, get mad, and write mad things in big, mad letters. I scribble down quotes, story ideas, lists, jokes, complaints, letters to myself, purposefully disregarding formal structure. This is my “feelings” journal. It’s less of a record and more of an imperfect unpacking of the chatter inside my head.
I like looking back at my journals periodically to see how much has changed, what the headlines were, how I was feeling. Certain themes and behaviors pop out over time, certain moments, conversations, exchanges with strangers on the street, that I’d forgotten and am thankful I saved for later reading. Even flipping back to January of last year, so much has changed (clearly), and carving time for reflection feels so important.
New journalers, try not to let a fear of writing or fatigue deter you. Your journal is a safe space, and it can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. Perhaps you just list bluntly what you did that day or draw an emoji. Perhaps you let yourself lose it over how uncertain the world is. Or maybe you start a novel.
Below, I share notebook options for those who want to begin a practice for 2021 or refresh their old notebook. Consider whether you want lines or no lines, whether you’ll be writing inside or on the go, or whether you prefer something large or portable. It’s up to you, but the important thing is, no matter whether it's this month or next: Just start.

Papier Minimal Photo Strip Notebook
This pretty, personalizable page-turner features a three-photo strip of your choice. In a year like this, maybe pictures of travels past or faces you miss most (or meals) is the inspiration you need to dive into writing. This makes for a lovely gift to yourself or to a loved one who will appreciate the thoughtful gesture. For the finicky among us, you can even decide whether this is a soft or hardcover notebook, as well as whether it comes with plain, lined, or dotted pages.

Paper Source Donuts Custom Journal
Hopefully you (brace yourself) donut get too hungry looking at at this confection-covered notebook. You can stamp your name on the colorful cover to make it yours, and the journal is also handily spiral-bound, so that the pages will always lie flat. It's up to you whether those pages are plain, glazed (sorry, lined), or dedicated to dates .

Let That Sh*t Go: A Journal for Leaving Your Bullsh*t Behind and Creating a Happy Life
If you need a journal that gets real with you like your best friend would without being wishy-washy, this notebook suffers no fools. Instead of intimidating, empty pages, Let That Sh*t Go varies its personable prompts, asking you to list out “Positive Procrastination" to-dos, as well as things that have got on your nerves recently (and belly-laugh moments, too).

Society6 Amber Dusk Notebook
Designed as an open platform for artists looking to showcase their work, everything on sale at Society6, from home décor to journals, features designs by creatives from around the world. This gorgeous, wraparound landscape was created by husband-and-wife team SpaceFrog Designs. All notebooks are printed on sturdy 70-lb paper, so your scribblings won't bleed, and the cover is made of soft, anti-scuff laminate. You can customize whether the notebook is lined or unlined and if you want one or a set of three, it's up to you.

Michelle Obama's Becoming : A Guided Journal for Discovering Your Voice
For fans of Michelle Obama's memoir Becoming , this inspirational journal is for you. Inside, you'll find morale-boosting quotes from the former first lady, as well as more than 150 reflective prompts tied to the stories in her book, such as: “List three people who contribute to your circle of strength" and “Write about a specific experience when someone dislodged a dream of yours… How did you try to overcome that obstacle?” It's like a little therapy session but far cheaper.

Moleskine Classic
I’ve used Moleskines for over 15 years as my trusty, go-to journals. This is its classic notebook, which is high-quality for the price and a nice size (small enough to transport but not glaringly large). The paper doesn’t bleed, and you can choose whether you want lines, no lines, ruled, dotted, etc. The Classic also has a pocket in the back, which is handy for storing mementos.

Strathmore Visual Bristol Journal Mixed Media
A friend sent me this visual journal for my birthday last year, and I immediately loved the idea of it. I use the 9" x12" and find its large, unlined pages freeing for scrawling all-caps rants and mantras. The paper is designed for mixed media, so I paint with watercolor in here as well, in between entries. I’ve gone through almost three of these in a little over a year.

Panda Planner Pro
For the productive, project-oriented journalers, meet the Panda Planner Pro, which helps you home in on monthly focus/exercise goals (whether they’re physical or mental is up to you), daily habits you wish to take on, and that leaves space for reflection on your progress meeting those goals. Unlike most planners, the dates are not prefilled, so no page is wasted. Each planner lasts for six to nine months.

Fringe Assorted Slim Mini Journals (Two-Pack)
These pretty journals are small, ideal for sliding into a tote when you’re out, but bright enough that you’ll never lose them.

Intelligent Change The Five-Minute Journal
If the idea of devoting chunks of your day to journaling makes your stomach churn, here’s a more approachable option. This slender hardcover journal has short, guided gratitude prompts meant to leave you feeling more positive and that don’t require unloading all of your feelings (not that I’m judging).
Editor's Note: This journal will be in stock on January 14.

Day One App (Premium)
If you’re on the go and appreciate the idea of cataloguing your life into a digital archive, this app offers a modern approach to journaling. Its clean design allows you to capture memories and stray thoughts in your phone via typing, handwriting, drawing, photo, video, voice memo, and social. You can even dictate into the app for transcription. Day One Premium automatically backs up and offers end-to-end encryption and passcodes for privacy. There’s a free version, but if you want the bells and whistles, at $3 per month, you’re essentially paying the same price over the course of a year that you would for a nice-quality paper journal and get a wide range of features.

Denik Threadless Lay Flat Notebook
This beautiful sewn notebook serves as a motivational reminder to be kind to yourself and others in tough times—that kindness is a strength. Maybe kindness means forgiving yourself for not writing every day, or perhaps praising yourself for writing even one sentence. The journal handily lies flat, and you can customize the style of inside paging to your preference.

Rifle Paper Co. Memoir Journal
This lovely linen notebook is foil-stamped and subtly lined with neon pink for neat writers. It lies flat and has vellum pages, which is the type of substantial paper you find in stationery and greeting cards.

Moonster Leather Journal
If you’re craving an artisanal option that’s reminiscent of ships and sonnets, look no further than this romantic hand-stitched journal bound in water buffalo leather, with an antique strap. Its heavy, creamy paper is made of acid-free, recycled cotton and practically begs you to scrawl your revelations in its pages (with a quill or fountain pen, natch).

Leuchtturm 1917 Medium A5
For more serious bullet journalers, the hardcover Leuchtturm is a cult favorite, lays flat, and has a gusseted pocket and elastic closure band. It helpfully includes page numbers, a blank table of contents for organization, as well as sticky archival labels, and comes in a wide range of punchy colors.

Incredible Journals Daily Positivity Journal
If you want a journal that structures and inspires you, this highly rated, faux-leather journal includes motivational quotes and creates space for gratitude, sleep tracking, positive habit tracking, affirmations, monthly reflections, and more.

Poluma Dotted Grid Journal Notebook
For beginner bullet journalers , this robin’s egg blue, gridded diary is an inexpensive option that won’t make you feel like “Why did I spend $50 on a journal I might not use?” Reviewers rave especially about the durability of the paper, if you’re inclined to doodle with inky pens.

Insight Editions Self-Care: A Day & Night Reflection Journal
This 90-day journal provides a space for recording daily goings-on with your mental health in mind. It dives into your mood, how your body felt, what you ate and drank, stressors you faced, and explores kindnesses you bestowed upon yourself. If you particularly struggle with finding time for self-care , consider writing in this journal one of those acts.

YellowPaperHouse Junque Journal
For artists and doodlers, here’s a splashy, colorful sketchbook, in which every page is different for a variety of media (mixed media, watercolor, card stock, and more). Its spiral makes it easy to flip between pages and would be great for scrapbooking. Plus, this top-selling journal has the option of including six different pens, so you can practice your penmanship and brush strokes.

Yup, in this blog post, you’ll find some free printable book trackers that I’m sure you’ll love!

Have you been meaning to finally get around to reading that pile of books in your living room? Why not take a page from the Bullet Journaler’s handbook and start tracking your progress with these free book trackers?
These printables keep track of the book titles you’ve read, or you can use them as a virtual bookshelf for the books you want to read next.
One way or another, these trackers are sure to help any reader stay on track no matter how many volumes they have left on their to-read list.
Before we dive in, be sure to scroll until the end to see some more resources with free printables.
Book trackers are fun and handy pages, but let's be honest - they might not be for everyone. And you might not have the time to set them up either.
The best way to try it, see if you can benefit from it, and not spend any time doing it is by using printables. And here is a list of fun book trackers I know you'll love.

Masha Plans Book Tracker
Starting with the book tracker I created, and it's already in the Resources Vault .
If you don't have access yet, just click "Get Free Printables" and you'll find how to sign up and get this and 100+ other free Bullet Journal printables.

Reading Log
One of the best places to get free printables, and you'll find there are so many different variations of a book tracker.
My favorite part is that you can actually customize it a little bit before printing.

FREE Printable Bookshelf Reading Log
Beautiful bookshelf and I love the little extra things added to the shelves, apart from books.

Free Bullet Journal Book Tracker Printables
This book tracker looks different, but i love the variety in book designs here, and you can play around so much with the colors of the books.

FREE Bullet Journal Tracker Templates
This post has a lot of different trackers, but if you keep scrolling, you'll eventually find this lovely book tracker.

Reading Tracker Template
Beautiful two-page reading tracker. Don't be alarmed when it asks you to check out, it's $0, and you only need to subscribe to the newsletter.

Bullet Journal Books To Read Template
Super cute book tracker and I love that in this post, the author also describes how to create one just like this in your journal, in case you feel like trying it.

Book Tracker
This tracker has a more business approach since it's a table. But I love it; it makes things clearer and it gives you space to actually add extra information, like when you read it and how would you rank it.

Free Printable Reading Tracker
Absolutely beautiful book tracker, and it comes with a few more pages, like a yearly reading tracker, book reviews and book notes.

Book Tracker Freebie
Classic bookshelf tracker, but using different fonts and illustrations, it does look different from the others on the list.

Book Tracker {FREE PLANNING PRINTABLE}
I don't know about you, but I love printables that have tables because by myself I really hate drawing all those lines. And I like that this one has a start and end date for each book.

Read Aloud Book Shelf Tracker (free)
Another bookshelf tracker, but here there are already so many decorations, and they are in color. I bet you'd want to read more just to make sure you can color all the books and get a complete illustration.

Book Reading Tracker
Very simple design, but practical, and it allows you more space to customize and decorate it however you want.
This post may contain affiliate links. They will be of no extra expense for you, but I receive a small credit. Please see my Disclosure for more details. Thank you for supporting Masha Plans!
Using Printables In Your Journal
First of all, what do you need to add printables to your Bullet Journal? Well, not much, actually.
But there are a few things you don’t want to mess up with (like I did and paid for it dearly).
So here are some supplies you’ll need:
- A printer. You might already have one, and if not, I definitely can recommend this one .
- Paper. This is very important! If you’re planning to use some markers and brush pens to decorate your printable, you need to have smooth high quality paper. Otherwise, it will damage your pens. I recommend this one .
- Paper cutter. You can definitely use scissors, but I find that you usually get smoother edges with a paper cutter like this one .
- Adhesive. You’ll need something to add your printables to your journal, and I don’t recommend using glue. An adhesive tape like this one will do a much better job.
- Corner rounder. This is really something extra, but I thought I’d mention it. If your journal corners are round, you might find it helpful to have this tool to ensure that your printables match your journal. I’d recommend this one .
Another big question is always – how do you make printables fit your journal?
It’s quite easy, really. All you need is to mark the correct size when you’re sending it to print. Choose the size for your journal, not the size of the printing paper and it will print the right way.
Check my post How To Use Printables In Your Bullet Journal to get some more details and a step-by-step process with images.

Articles, Books, and . . . ? Understanding the Many Types of Information Found in Libraries
- Reference Sources
Academic Journals
Magazines and trade journals, conference papers, technical reports, anthologies.
- Documents and Reports
- Non-Text Content
- Archival Materials
Because of their short length, articles often exclude background info and explanations, so they're usually the last stop in your research process, after you've narrowed down your topic and need to find very specific information.
The main thing to remember about articles is that they're almost always published in some larger work , like a journal, a newspaper, or an anthology. It's those "article containers" that define the types of articles, how you use them, and how you find them.
Articles are also the main reason we have so many databases . The Library Catalog lists everything we own, but only at the level of whole books and journals. It will tell you we have the New York Times, and for what dates, but it doesn't know what articles are in it. Search in UC Library Search using the "Articles, books, and more" scope will search all the databases we subscribe to and some we don't. If you find something we do not own, you can request it on Interlibrary Loan.
Physical Media
While newer journals and magazines are usually online, many older issues are still only available in paper. In addition, many of our online subscriptions explicitly don't include the latest material, specifically to encourage sales of print subscriptions. Older newspapers are usually transferred to microfilm.
Scholarly Sources
The terms academic or scholarly journal are usually synonymous with peer-reviewed , but check the journal's publishing policies to be sure. Trade journals, magazines, and newspapers are rarely peer-reviewed.
Primary or Secondary Sources
In the social sciences and humanities, articles are usually secondary sources; the exceptions are articles reporting original research findings from field studies. Primary source articles are more common in the physical and life sciences, where many articles are reporting primary research results from experiments, case studies, and clinical trials.

Clues that you're reading an academic article
- Abstract at beginning

Articles in academic (peer-reviewed) journals are the primary forum for scholarly communication, where scholars introduce and debate new ideas and research. They're usually not written for laymen, and assume familiarity with other recent work in the field. Journal articles also tend to be narrowly focused, concentrating on analysis of one or two creative works or studies, though they may also contain review articles or literature reviews which summarize recent published work in a field.
In addition to regular articles, academic journals often include book reviews (of scholarly books ) and letters from readers commenting on recent articles.

- No abstract, footnotes or endnotes

Unlike scholarly journals, magazines are written for a mainstream audience and are not peer-reviewed. A handful of academic journals (like Science and Nature ) blur the line between these two categories; they publish peer-reviewed articles, but combine them with news, opinions, and full-color photos in a magazine-style presentation.
Trade journals are targeted toward a specific profession or industry. Despite the name, they are usually not peer-reviewed. However, they sometimes represent a gray area between popular magazines and scholarly journals. When in doubt, ask your professor or TA whether a specific source is acceptable.
Newspapers as Primary Sources
Though usually written by journalists who were not direct witnesses to events, newspapers and news broadcasts may include quotes or interviews from people who were. In the absence of first-person accounts, contemporary news reports may be the closest thing to a primary source available.
Of all the content types listed here, newspapers are the fastest to publish. Use newspaper articles to find information about recent events and contemporary reports of/reactions to historic events.

Reviews are a type of article that can appear in any of the categories above. The type of publication will usually determine the type of review. Newspapers and magazines review movies, plays, general interest books, and consumer products. Academic journals review scholarly books.
Note that a review is not the same as scholarly analysis and criticism! Book reviews, even in scholarly journals, are usually not peer-reviewed.

Conference papers aren't always published and can be tricky to find . Recent conference papers are often online, along with the PowerPoint files or other materials used in the actual presentation. However, access may be limited to conference participants and/or members of the academic organization which sponsored the conference.
In paper formats, all of the papers from a certain conference may be re-printed in the conference proceedings . Search for Proceedings of the [name of conference] to find what's available, or ask for help from a librarian. But be aware that published proceedings may only include abstracts or even just the name of the presenter and the title of the presentation. This is especially true of poster presentations , which really are large graphic posters (which don't translate well to either printed books or computer monitors).
As the name implies, most technical reports are about research in the physical sciences or engineering. However, there are also technical reports produced in the life and social sciences,

Like conference papers , some technical reports are eventually transformed into academic journal articles , but they may also be released after a journal article to provide supplementary data that didn't fit within the article. Also like conference papers, technical reports can be hard to find , especially older reports which may only be available in microfiche . Ask for help from a librarian!
Anthologies are a cross-over example. They're books that contain articles (chapters). Anthologies may be collections of articles by a single author, or collections of articles on a theme from different authors chosen by an editor. Many anthologies reprint articles already published elsewhere, but some contain original works.
Anthologies are rarely peer-reviewed, but they still may be considered scholarly works, depending on the reputation of the authors and editors. Use the same criteria listed for scholarly books .
Of course, reprints of articles originally published in peer-reviewed journals retain their "scholarly" status. (Note that most style manuals have special rules for citing reprinted works.)

The 15 Best Reading Journals For Book Lovers
Keep track of all your recent reads.

Whether you're a certified bibliophile or just like the occasional beach read, a reading journal can be a worthwhile investment. The best reading journals have at least 100 pages, can log at least 50 books, and are designed to suit your particular journaling needs.
What To Look For In A Reading Journal
The number of books that a reading journal can log is one of the most important factors to consider when buying one, and this is dependent on both the format and the size of the journal. Much like guided journals , reading journals can offer varying levels of writing prompts as a springboard for your reflections. Some simply ask for the title, author, and genre of the book you’ve read, while others provide sample discussion questions or encourage you to find memorable quotes.
More complex prompts will take up more page space per book, while simpler ones will allow you to log between one and two books per page. If you can do without pre-assigned prompts and categories, you can simply invest in a blank journal and dedicate a single page (or more) for each book you read.
Next, you’ll want to consider page size. Journals with large 8-by-10-inch pages provide more room for note-taking, while smaller journals trade space for portability. Cover type is also worth thinking about since hardcovers are very durable, making them great for readers who like to carry their journals with them everywhere they go. Softcover journals tend to be more affordable, but they don’t stand up to wear and tear as well.
Finally, think about the type of binding you prefer. Journals with perfect bindings or glue binding tend to be both easy to find and very affordable. Wire-O binding adds another layer of reinforcement, which is great for those who tend to carry journals everywhere they go. Other types of construction include lay-flat binding, which allows pages to lay flat on a surface for easy writing, and Smyth sewn, which is stitched at the spine for added durability.
Check out our recommendations for the best reading journals below — and once you’ve picked the right journal, don't forget to have a good pen ready for taking notes.
The Best For Most Readers

If you want a quality reading journal that will stand up to wear and tear, The Book Lover's Journal is a solid choice. It's made with a durable hard cover and measures 4.5 by 7.5 inches, making it easy to carry in most bags. It also has a concealed wire-O binding so that the pages lay flat as you write, and the inside of the spiral offers a convenient place to store your pen.
This journal allows you to log up to 67 books, and it dedicates two pages of space per title. Each entry includes a star rating chart for elements like pace, plot development, and ease of reading, as well as an entire lined page for notes and opinions. There are lots of extra features, too, including recommended reading lists, a space to record books you want to read in the future, pages to list books borrowed or lent, and more.
One fan raved: “I sort of had my own book journal, which was just a blank page journal wherein I kept track of everything I'd read, along with various details about each. When I ran into this Journal, I loved it so much, I bought it on the spot, and then came home and ordered a second copy from Amazon. You couldn't ask for a more comprehensive journal to record your readings, and all in 4 5/8" X 7 1/2". You even have a nice covered spiral binding that not only allows the journal to lay flat, but also gives you a nice channel for your pen.”

The first page records the title, author, dates started and finished, and ratings for three categories: how exciting, ease of reading, and overall rating. There’s also a place to record details like the genre, number of pages, and publication date of each book you’ve logged. This is followed by three writing prompts with enough space for paragraph-length answers. The second page, designed with a dot grid, is entirely dedicated to the reader's thoughts and favorite quotes. This reading journal also has bonus features like reading challenges, lists (books borrowed, finished, did not finish), and a daily reading tracker.
One fan raved: “I loooove this reading journal! [...] After looking at so many different options, I chose this one and was not disappointed. It has so many great pages and layouts, and there are PLENTY of each page that I know I'll be able to use this for a few years. In recent decades, two-dimensional materials have attracted significant attention due to their unique chemical and physical properties, which are useful for various applications. In addition to optoelectronic devices and energy harvesting and storage, 2D materials are used in many sensing applications. Two-dimensional structures have numerous attributes, such as high surface sensitivity, excellent biocompatibility, and high elasticity, making them effective as sensing devices. In this review, we aim to provide an update on the recent developments in the field of sensors fabricated using atomically thin 2D materials. A survey of different types of sensors is presented, including gas, electrochemical, biomedical, and health sensors, together with recent findings on their real-world applications. Furthermore, human body temperature monitoring, electrography, sweat detection, respiratory gas, and saliva sensors are also reviewed to assess current trends toward human chemical signal detection. Given that 2D materials encompass a vast array of novel materials, we highlight the contemporary trend in the applications of 2D materials and suggest the exciting future of the 2D family. By thoroughly addressing the fundamental aspects, recent developments, and associated challenges, our recommendation in terms of future challenges and prospects will pave the way for readers.
