How to Write a Scholarship Cover Letter

write a cover letter for scholarship

Scholarship cover letters might seem intimidating, but they should not deter you from applying for scholarships. Sometimes, students are intimidated because they don’t know how to write a scholarship cover letter. The following guide includes a thorough description of what you should address in the letter and how to format it.

First, let’s talk about the most fundamental question: what’s the ultimate goal of the cover letter?

Goals of a scholarship cover letter

Create a personal appeal by letting your voice come through.

Most scholarship applications largely consist of forms and checklists, but cover letters are a great opportunity for the reader to hear you make your case in your own voice. While you should still maintain a formal tone, you should not be afraid to write personably.

Emphasize the importance of your accomplishments

Resumes and application forms are great opportunities to describe your duties at past positions you’ve held, but a cover letter is a great opportunity to go one step further.

Describe the skills developed in your past positions

Think about how past learning experiences helped shape your ambitions. For example, if you had an internship in the office of a local government official, you could use your cover letter to describe how your experiences helped hone your organizational skills and shape your sense of civic duty.

Share what you hope to pursue and build upon

How will you work towards your future goals and build upon your past experiences? Scholarship readers want to award their funds to students with a strong sense of ambition and an exciting future. Emphasize that you have big plans for the future, and how you will use the scholarship to accomplish them.

Highlight circumstances not addressed in the scholarship application

For example, if you have community service experience, but there was not a question in the application that allowed you to mention that, a cover letter is a great place to bring it up. This may not be specifically relevant to the scholarship, but speaks to your character and can help put you ahead of the crowd.

Differences between a scholarship cover letter and a scholarship essay

Scholarship essays and cover letters have a lot in common:

However, while there is a lot of overlap between scholarship cover letters and scholarship essays, there are a few key differences:

Formatting tips

While everyone’s cover letter is different and some scholarships may have specific requirements, here are a few general formatting tips to make your cover letter a success:

Some scholarships will list the name that the letter should be addressed. If you can’t find the name easily, try doing a bit of research to see if you can find the name of the person who will be reading your application. This can help put you ahead of your competition by showing that you did some additional research.

If you can’t find a name, you can skip that part of the header and write: “Dear selection committee” in your introduction. Here is an example header for someone who was able to find the name of their application reader:

 Harvard University

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Amy Cooper and I am currently in a high school in Brooklyn. In the spring of 2021, I will be starting my freshman year at Harvard University with an intended major in music.

Since my freshman year of high school, I have served on my school’s music band. During freshman and sophomore year, I worked as a musician. By junior and senior year, I became the lead singer in the school choir. Throughout my four years of being part of the music club, I have become better as a musician and improved my singing skills. I have developed skills like music composition, various instruments like, drums and keyboard. Although these tasks intimidated me in the beginning, I can confidently say that I now feel very skilled and knowledgeable about music.

I am particularly passionate about giving back to society through my music. I have participated in multiple shows here in Brooklyn. I have been fortunate to have one of my shows telecasted Live in Brooklyn.

Needless to say, there is an ocean of knowledge outside and I am excited and ready to learn many things and gain knowledge at every step. I am eager to start my undergraduate education and attain knowledge from experts. I am excited to take my music to another level with all the practice and effort that it takes. And learn everything there is to gain in the process. I am also hoping to be a part of The Harvard music club and contribute to the club on campus. I want to make the most of every opportunity that I get further to build my career and achieve professional and personal development.

As you are well aware, the cost of college is very high. As much as I have saved during high school, I will still have to take out loans to fund my college education. I am considering to work part-time along with my studies and practice, but at the same time be able to manage time well, so that I do justice to the program I a signing up for as well as ease the pressure of loan. Hence, this scholarship would greatly help me cover some of these fees and give me more time to focus on school.

I am hardworking and also creative, and I can’t wait to showcase my skills at Harvard University. I would be so grateful to receive a scholarship. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

A scholarship motivation letter can make or break your application. This is your opportunity to showcase your knowledge before an in-person interview. Motivation letters are not required for every application. Yet when they are necessary, they are critical. In this guide, we will provide tips for writing a scholarship motivation letter.

What is a scholarship motivation letter?

A motivation letter is like a cover letter you may include with a job application and resume. The goal of the letter is to explain:

Review committees often use motivation letters to narrow down their pool of applicants. Then they assess the rest of the application from the candidates they like best.

Motivation letters are usually required for graduate-level scholarships. Sometimes, you may need to write one for specialty programs at a bachelor’s level too. If you have the option to include a motivation letter with your scholarship application, take it. This may be the only chance you have to wow the review committee.

Motivation letter for scholarship applications – general guidelines

Usually, the application will not specify how long your motivation letter should be. You will need to use your best judgment to write a concise motivation letter. The letter should include:

Motivation letters are usually around 500-1,000 words. Split them into paragraphs for easy reading.

tailor motivational letter concept

Tailor your motivation letter to fit the sholarship

Your motivation letter should link your future plans with the goals of the scholarship . How will you benefit from continued education in this field? How will you use this knowledge to support the mission of the scholarship provider?

Say that the scholarship is from an agency that supports wildlife preservation. Your letter should explain how you plan to apply your education towards a career in that field.

You also need to establish why you deserve this application more than other applicants. What specific experiences do you have now that set you apart from the rest? What specific plans do you have that will address a current issue in the world? Even if you currently have limited knowledge about the issue, use that to your advantage. Explain how you could thrive with more education and solve even more problems in the future.

The structure of a scholarship motivation letter

Scholarship motivation letters vary by award, but they usually consist of three elements:

Your introduction should include your name, level of education and the degree program.

Your first body paragraph should include any work-related experience you have. This can include both paid and unpaid internships. You should show the growth of your career in chronological order. Finally, suggest where your career will go with continued education.

Your second body paragraph should explain what you hope to gain from your education. Think of which problems you aim to solve or uncover.

Your final body paragraph should explain your holistic plans for the future. Some ideas for inspiration:

Finally, your conclusion should re-emphasize why you are a good candidate for the scholarship.

What NOT to include when writing a scholarship motivation letter

Your scholarship motivation letter should be well-written with no grammar or spelling errors. Use a professional tone and advanced phrasing (no slang). Provide specific examples about your past, present and future. Stay away from vague generalizations. Vagueness suggests a lack of care or knowledge. Neither of  these are impressive to a scholarship review committee.

Some final tips

Writing a motivation letter for scholarship applications takes time and commitment. Plan what you will say in advance, and allow at least three days to write the letter, review it, step away from it and edit it. This extra time will provide the best chance of success with your application.

A Sample Scholarship Motivation Letter

Julie Moore 9876 Smith St. Stillwater, OK 74074The Scholarship Committee 123 Learning Rd. Suite 4A Oklahoma City, OK 73127

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Julie Moore and I am a third year student at Oklahoma State University. I am currently pursuing a five-year Bachelor of Architecture Degree. My plan is to follow up with a one-year master’s degree after I graduate.

In high school, I worked extensively with my local Habitat for Humanity branch to help build homes for low income families. I learned about the construction process from the ground up, and I discovered the importance of function in architectural design. The homes we built during my four years as a volunteer were never extravagant. They served their purpose and became a beacon of hope for their owners.

My education has been focused on this mindset: function over form, stability over showmanship. I have enrolled in several classes that crossover to the Architectural Engineering major. My goal is to have a comprehensive view of how design meets structure. I have worked on three extra-credit residential design projects under the supervision of my architecture professors (Dr. X and Dr. Y). This helped speed up my research and education.

My goal is to become an architect to create accessible, affordable housing opportunities in underprivileged communities. Living in a college town, I have seen countless rental properties available. Yet there are few homes for sale that are affordable enough for college students and first-time buyers. This is the case in many towns throughout America, especially areas with a low standard of living. I want to create neighborhoods that include affordable starter homes. This would enable low and middle-class families to build equity, avoid excessive debt, and create financial stability for their futures.

This summer, I will intern with  LMNOP Architects. Upon completion of my master’s degree, I hope to continue there as I further develop my skills. After working under acclaimed residential architects Suzan Craft and Peter Wood, I would like to open my own architectural firm focused on developing inexpensive, high-quality housing. I also would like to work with Habitat for Humanity again, this time as an architect instead of a general laborer. I believe firmly in their mission to build “a world where everyone has a decent place to live.” I appreciate your consideration. With your help, I can continue my schooling in architecture and design to bring accessible homes to those in need.

Sincerely, Julie Moore

Review your scholarship qualifications:.

Different scholarships are available online, therefore, every organization has its requirements, preferences, and expectations. It is crucial to review your scholarship qualifications when writing your cover letter. It could help you become a strong candidate for the scholarship application and understand the right things to add that will capture the reviewing committee. The good thing you can put your skills and experience to make the committee knows you understand their expectations.

Start with an Introduction:

Your scholarship letter should have an introductory paragraph describing who you are and why you want to earn the scholarship. Here, you could discuss how the fund will open diverse opportunities you can’t have access to because you are not financially buoyant. It is advisable to add information about yourself such as schools attended, a program you are interested in, the degree you earned, etc.

Add Internship or Professional Experience:

The first paragraph can discuss your professional experience or you can give details on any internship you have completed using highlights to relate them. For instance, if the scholarship is for students wanting to enter the STEM field you can share your laboratory intern experience and how the program offers you skills and knowledge to bag a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. The scholarship committee might focus more on you because you have undergone professional growth and development.

Describe your Academic Goals and Interests:

The next paragraph can highlight academic interests and goals. The scholarship will help you get finance for your education. Therefore showing you have an academic desire or aspiration will increase your chances of the scholarship. Also, you can describe the academic degree you want to earn and why the program will support you. It is possible to apply for a scholarship from an external organization. If you have been struggling to pay your tuition fee, you can let the committee know it will help you cater for your education.

Crosscheck Your Post Graduation Aspirations:

Besides adding your short-term academic goals and professional experience, you can give information about your postgraduation aspirations. Whether you want to earn a graduate degree or have a professional license can make the scholarship committee take you as a serious candidate. It is one of the effective ways of highlighting your long-term impact in return to get financial assistance for your academic career.

Add a Concluding Paragraph:

When you have finished writing the three body paragraphs, you can write a concluding paragraph to summarize your academic goals. You can use the section to appreciate the scholarship committee for the privilege to apply for their scholarship. Your contact information can be written to help them contact you.

Proofread and Revise:

After you are through with the first draft, you can revise your work to correct errors like wrong spellings, grammatical mistakes, punctuation, etc. You can proofread it yourself or give it to someone vast with the English language, and it can be your friend, professor, or mentor. The essence of this is for them to help you crosscheck your writing style and eliminate irrelevant details from the document.

How to write a scholarship cover letter

In this article I will show you how to write a scholarship cover letter and also provide you with some of the best samples I’ve come across.

During your scholarship application you may not be offered the chance to write an essay or a note that advertises you to your scholarship provider. And scholarship cover letter is the only chance an applicant has to advertise his/herself to the scholarship donor.

It is a well strategic later that provides a scholarship applicant the opportunity to tells the scholarship representative or donor why he or she is the best fit for the scholarship.

This is where students talk about their academic prowess – how he or she has been involved in Community Services.

Therefore, it is important that every scholarship applicant learns how to strategically right a scholarship cover letter, because it can make or mar your chances of being offered the scholarship.

It is your only chance of telling the scholarship provider how you compliment their values and interests

A scholarship cover letter should not be written like an abstract of a thesis or project work. It should be separated in paragraphs, each talking about a particular point or topic.

Some of the most-include critical points in scholarship cover letter are points like: academic history, work experience if any, future (academic) goals, and qualities about you that depicts what the scholarship donor is interested in.

Though you’re not going to write titles for each of these points. But make sure they are included in your paragraphs as you separate them from each other.

Tips for writing a good scholarship application cover  letter

  • Put your name, address and date at the top of your leader and follow it up with the name and address of the recipient of the scholarship cover letter.
  • It is important that you use the name of the recipient of your letter. Avoid generic greetings as much as possible. Things like Dear Ma/Sir or to whom it may concern should be avoided.
  • Explain in the best way you can why you are the best person for the scholarship. You need to convince the scholarship donor.
  • Include your academic goals and your involvement in social activities reiterate your qualities and strength in any way possible.
  • Make sure you give appropriate examples through your life experiences to back up any of these points. This validated your claims and makes you appear strong and unique. Be honest about it.
  • Your language should be formal. Avoid errors (grammar and spellings).
  • Make sure you emphasize keywords from the scholarship requirements. It will keep me in context.
