Applying for teaching positions can be daunting because of all of the materials you need to submit. Your cover letter is an especially important part of the application since it highlights your best skills. Writing an excellent cover letter can set you apart from other applicants, so it’s important to take your time and write a targeted letter for every application. Start by researching the position and getting all of the necessary information before you start writing. Then, use the intro and body paragraphs to emphasize your qualifications for the job. Conclude your letter by emphasizing your interest in the position and requesting an interview, and don’t forget to revise and proofread before you send your letter to the prospective employer.

Always make sure that your CV is up to date, and relevant to the needs of the employer. In teaching, it’s not that you’re going to be one of many recruits shuffled around until you find your niche – you’re a one-off, in your own classroom, responsible for your own pupils from day one. Any CV or cover letter you send, whether speculative or for an advertised position, needs to be sympathetic to each different context.

Your cover letter, the person specification, and the job description are pieces of a complex jigsaw. Sometimes, these pieces need more context and that’s where your research comes in. Look up Ofsted reports, local news reports, school performance information. All these pieces combined make the picture on the box, and you need to take the whole thing into account. Employers know there might be no ideal match, but to get yourself on a shortlist, and be invited for interview, you need to present yourself as close a fit as you can.

If you’re an NQT or RQT (newly or recently qualified teacher), you might think that you don’t have the skills and experience to make strong applications – but this certainly isn’t the case. Schools always need new recruits, and it’s part of their role to develop you. Show them your potential by relating what you have learned from your experiences so far, where the challenges were and how you overcame them, how you’ve made a difference and what you feel you can offer on a personal as well as professional level.

More established colleagues will have more experiences to draw on, but be careful not to fall into the trap of talking about one year’s experience repeated fifteen times – you still need to show a sense of development and further potential. Having a few years’ teaching experience to call on can help your confidence levels, but remember that you’re expected to show that you had an impact, that your own initiatives or methods made changes happen and that those changes became embedded in practice. Explain a problem that you were aware of, how you intervened and what the situation is now like as a result. Be prepared to link this to the ultimate aim of improved pupil outcomes – it’s essentially how all teachers are judged.

The higher up the professional ladder you intend to go, the more guidance and feedback you need on the application you’re about to submit. Friends and contacts in similar positions to the one you’re applying for can offer insights that official descriptions can’t. Don’t stop there, though – talk to people in more senior positions. What would they be looking for if they were recruiting for a similar role? Ask for feedback on your letter, and from people who won’t just give you an easy time. Once you’ve got that feedback, trust it. Be prepared to start again, if necessary, so allow time within the process for this to happen. Dig deep into your motives, your letter needs to reflect the factors in education that really drive you. Think about what makes you smile at work and make sure you put that in.

Paragraphs 2-3: If you can squeeze in the third paragraph, we recommend it as each paragraph is an opportunity to demonstrate indisputable evidence of the credentials and qualifications you boldly state in your opening paragraph.

Each paragraph should not be a repeat of your resume; rather, each paragraph should hone in on one clear accomplishment, be it the results of your teaching methodology, values, or something else. Don’t try to tackle multiple topics in a paragraph. Be detailed, specific, and quantify your results when possible.

Closing paragraph: Clench an interview with this final paragraph. Now’s not the time to lay your head on your desk and call it a day. Don’t let this be your closing paragraph:

At best, it exudes laziness. At worst, no one will believe you’re actually interested in the job but just need something to put beans on the table.

Finally, add a call to action that anticipates a follow-up or interview. With the following closing paragraph, it’s clear that teaching is far more to you than just a job:

Writing a good covering letter could make all the difference to your job application. With so many candidates to choose from, first impressions are really important, so it’s crucial to get the covering letter right.

Education careers expert John Howson recommends beginning the letter with a powerful statement: “Job applicants need to provoke the reader’s interest,” he says. “However, what you leave out is just as important as what you put in, in order to keep the letter succinct and punchy.”

“The competitive nature of the teaching profession means first impressions are imperative,” says James Innes, managing director of The CV Centre. “Many applications may be judged solely on the strength of the covering letter.”

The length of the covering letter is normally specified in the job advertisement. However, if there is no limit set, your letter shouldn’t be longer than two sides of A4 and should be easy to read. Use a standard font and break the main body into chunks so it can be skim-read.

Get the formalities right

If your covering letter needs to be written and attached, rather than included in an online form, you need to get the formal stuff right.

Include your name and address on the right-hand side. On the left, put the date, name of recipient (if you’re unsure, telephone the school and check the spelling) and the address of the school. Any proposal submitted in response to this funding opportunity should be submitted in accordance with the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) that is in effect for the relevant due date to which the proposal is being submitted. The NSF PAPPG is regularly revised and it is the responsibility of the proposer to ensure that the proposal meets the requirements specified in this solicitation and the applicable version of the PAPPG. Submitting a proposal prior to a specified deadline does not negate this requirement.

The Workplace Equity for Persons with Disabilities in STEM and STEM Education solicitation, which is managed by the Division of Equity for Excellence in STEM in the Directorate for STEM Education, supports fundamental, applied, and translational research that advances knowledge and practice about diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible STEM and STEM education workplaces and postsecondary training environments for persons with disabilities. Proposals should focus on one or more of the following three research themes: (1) Studying barriers and solutions to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in STEM and STEM education workplaces and training settings for persons with disabilities; (2) Applying intersectional social identity perspectives to investigate characteristics and conditions of STEM and STEM education workplaces and training environments that limit and/or improve diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility for persons with disabilities; and (3) Conducting use-inspired and solution-oriented translational research about diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible STEM and STEM Education workplaces and training settings for persons with disabilities.

Research proposals must address key project design components: (1) The inclusion of researchers, experts, and organizations with authentic disability experiences; (2) The identification of disability type(s) to be investigated; (3) The specific STEM and/or STEM education workplaces and postsecondary training settings to be studied; (4) The use of theoretical and/or conceptual frameworks and robust research hypotheses, questions, designs, methodologies, data analyses, and data interpretation; (5) A plan to assess the success of the project; and (6) A plan for the accessible dissemination of knowledge and practice outcomes to traditional and new audiences.

The amount of funding and duration requested in the Research proposals submitted in response to this solicitation should align with the maturity of the proposed work and the size and scope of the project activities. Research proposals may request a budget up to $1,500,000 and a duration up to five (5) years. All proposals should justify the requested level of funding and duration in the project description. This solicitation also invites Synthesis projects, which are a very specific type of Research proposal. Justice Department opens criminal hacking probe into leaked Tucker Carlson videos

The Department of Justice has opened a criminal hacking probe into how behind-the-scenes footage of fired Fox News host Tucker Carlson was leaked to media organizations in recent months, according to a letter the federal agency sent the right-wing cable network this week.

US Attorney Roger Handberg and Assistant US Attorney Jay Trezevant notified Fox News of the investigation in a letter dated Thursday. The letter, which CNN obtained, said that the Justice Department “presently views Fox Corporation as one of the potential victim-witnesses of the alleged criminal conduct under investigation.”

“This letter is to advise you that the United States is investigating allegations of criminal wrongdoing involving intentional unauthorized access of a computer … intentional interception and disclosure of wire, oral, or electronic communication … conspiracy … and other federal criminal statutes,” Handberg and Trezevant wrote.

After Fox News fired Carlson in April, the progressive watchdog Media Matters published embarrassing behind-the-scenes video of Carlson making crude remarks while joking with staff and denigrating the Fox Nation streaming service.

Fox News sent a sternly worded cease-and-desist letter to Media Matters in early May, telling the organization that the “unaired footage” it was publishing was “unlawfully obtained.”

Media Matters, however, defended publishing the material, saying it was “reporting on newsworthy leaked material,” which is a “cornerstone of journalism.” The organization continued to publish leaked footage of Carlson after the demand from Fox News.

The Justice Department specifically said in its letter to Fox News that the criminal probe it is conducting is connected to the leaked video published by Media Matters. The letter also said that the probe is connected to leaked video published by Vice News that showed unaired footage from Carlson’s interview with Kanye West.

In a statement to CNN on Friday, Media Matters reiterated its decision to report on newsworthy material. A spokesperson for Vice News declined to comment.

The Justice Department letter stressed that it was not “making any suggestions or allegations of wrongdoing” against the publishers of the leaked videos.

The Tampa Bay Times, which first reported the news of the federal investigation Friday, reported that the FBI had executed a search warrant as part of the case on the home of Timothy Burke, a widely known former journalist who now operates his own media consulting firm.

The Justice Department letter to Fox News made no mention of Burke. But Mark Rasch, a former federal cybersecurity prosecutor-turned-attorney who is representing Burke, confirmed to CNN Friday evening that the FBI had executed a search warrant on Burke’s home.

Rasch told CNN that his client denies any criminal wrongdoing and that he had not yet seen an affidavit in support of the FBI’s search warrant.

Carlson did not respond to a request for comment on the matter Friday. The FBI declined to comment.

There's a big debate over whether it's OK to use AI in your job search. Some companies say it's 'a definite dealbreaker.'

Job seekers are using ChatGPT for cover letters, job-interview questions , and résumés.

Not all hiring managers are on board.

That's according to a March survey by Wakefield Research of 500 HR and recruiting professionals for the talent-cloud company iCIMS that found 39% of respondents said entry-level job candidates using AI bots such as ChatGPT to make their cover letters or résumés "is a definite dealbreaker." iCIMS and Wakefield Research also surveyed 1,000 college seniors in March.

"Almost half (47%) of college seniors are interested in using ChatGPT or other AI bots to write their resumes or cover letters, and 25% of Gen Z already use an AI bot to help write their résumés or cover letters," a press release from iCIMS said.

Almost a third of responding HR professionals said they "wouldn't hold it against them" if entry-level candidates did use AI tools to create cover letters or résumés, and almost a quarter responded, "I don't love it, but it's the new trend."

"I don't think it's that they're looking at this like, 'Oh, we don't want them to have that kind of support,'" Christy Spilka, the vice president and global head of talent acquisition at iCIMS, told Insider. "It's more we want to see your authentic self and how you handle certain interview questions."

ChatGPT might not be the best way to tell your story

Mandy Tang is a career coach and business owner. Tang told Insider's Beatrice Nolan a story of receiving a job application that included a cover letter even though the job posting didn't require one. While Tang said the cover letter was "well-formed, incredibly well-written, and had literally everything I wanted," she thought it may have been AI-generated because it seemed to be "just a copy and paste" of the job description.

"I thought of responding to them," Tang said. "But I just moved on and hired three really great people who were actually qualified — this person was probably qualified too, but I wouldn't know it from the cover letter."

Even AI-powered Bing discourages job seekers from using it to write a résumé. Insider's Huileng Tan tried asking the new Bing to generate a cover letter for a role . However, it responded with "I'm sorry, but I cannot write a cover letter for you. That would be unethical and unfair to other applicants," according to Tan's reporting.

AI tools might not even be that helpful for presenting your best self. Insider's Rebecca Knight tried experimenting with ChatGPT to help make her résumé "sharper, better, and targeted at potential senior-level editorial jobs" and said "the results wouldn't move me enough to hire an AI bot to tell my story."

"There were some helpful ideas, but there were also a lot of flowery phrases, needless superlatives, and bland suggestions," Knight wrote. "The upshot is that while ChatGPT can perhaps offer some inspiration, you still need to put in most of the work yourself."

Instead, use AI as a starting place for an application

Sandy Torchia, KPMG's vice chair of talent and culture, noted in a statement to Insider that people have historically had things including career centers and career coaches as available resources to provide assistance in the job-application process. Torchia added that "generative-AI tools used in the same way could be a game changer."

"For example, an applicant using generative AI to create a résumé or cover letter that accurately depicts their background and experience is far different from an applicant that uses said technology to produce misleading or inaccurate information," Torchia said.

Doug Ebertowski, a former career expert at FlexJobs, told Insider that hiring managers, recruiters, and HR professionals are "smart people and they can spot something that's canned and not personal to them and their organization."

According to Ebertowski, people could use ChatGPT for a starting point but should then personalize what the bot gives them. That way, hiring managers "can see that this is somebody that's taken time to think about who they are," Ebertowski said.

Even if you're not using it to write your application, knowing your way around AI is a good skill to tout

While some employers and recruiters may have a negative reaction to using AI in the job-hunting process, career experts also see the benefits of knowing ChatGPT or other types of AI. For example, Lisa Frank of LBF Strategies, a career-coaching and recruitment firm, said she thinks "ChatGPT will increasingly be a marketable skill for candidates to have on résumés and to discuss during interview processes — definitely those who have gone through an online course or even obtained a certification."

"Being skilled in how and when to use ChatGPT effectively and ethically could be a great way to stand out and add value to a role or company," Frank told Insider.

AI could also make you more productive at work. One study that gave customer-support agents access to AI assistance reported that "access to the tool increases productivity" by an average of 14%. While highly skilled workers didn't really benefit, lower-skilled workers did.

"These tools are still really new, so it's hard to predict how companies will use them, given the potential benefits and risks," Trisha Plovie, the senior vice president of Future of Work at Robert Half, said in a statement.

Plovie added that it's hard to say if companies will seek job candidates who have "expertise and experience" with AI tools.

"That said, learning about new technologies and how they can be leveraged at work is always a good idea, particularly if your job could be impacted by their use," Plovie said.

These issues are, no doubt, of paramount importance. I think, however, they should not detract from the core objectives of the public schools, the most important of which is to teach students how to read.

The Kansas Department of Education compiles annually measures of how well students are doing in English and language arts, i.e., reading and writing. In 2021-2022, the Academically Prepared for Post Secondary Success measure showed among all students in the Lawrence District 37.7% scored in the two lowest categories of reading achievement. Students receiving free lunch and the disabled scored 34.20%. About 3 in 10 students are leaving high school without the ability to read simple instructions, comic pages, electronic messages, etc. The gateway to opportunity in today’s economy and society is the ability to read!

Students with reading problems and from homes where reading is not a high priority should get concentrated instruction. Phonics is the best way to teach reading to disadvantaged kids. Improvement in teaching reading is as important, probably more so, then alleviating the effects of racism and poverty through affirmative action or diversity, equality and inclusion window dressing.
